Our Review of the The First Years C630 True Fit convertible car seat

The First Years True Fit C630 received a 4-star ease-of-use rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - the only convertible car seat tested to receive this rating!

The First Years (formerly Compass), renowned for their booster seats, introduces their first convertible car seat. The First Years C630 True Fit Convertible Car Seat transforms the convertible car seat category by adding a removable headrest, which allows for a more universal fit when installed rear-facing.  This means families that don't travel in an SUV or Mini Van can purchase a 65 lb capacity harnessed car seat and have fewer issues with fit.  The True Fit offers deep side wings that have been side-impact tested, a full EPS foam liner that absorbs energy, and built-in lock offs to provide secure installation without the use of confusing locking clips.

BENEFITS FOR MOM & DAD

Mom and dad fit better in the car with the C630 True Fit Convertible Car Seat in back - the removable headrest reduces the need to push the front seats so far forward with the seat installed rear-facing, letting those with long legs feel more comfortable. With a 5-point harness that goes up to 65 lbs (as preferred by safety advocates), your precious cargo can ride safely in a convertible car seat longer.

Installation: The First Years makes the True Fit's installation easy with built-in lock offs - belts especially designed to lock seat belts in place, thus reducing the need for using locking clips. The True Fit may also be installed using LATCH or seat belts rear-facing up to 35 lbs and forward-facing up to 65 lbs.

Note: For rear-facing use without the headrest, maximum weight is 22 lbs, and the child's head must be 1" below the top of the seat. With the headrest, the maximum weight is 35 lbs, and the head must be 1" below the top of the seat. The headrest MUST be used in forward facing installation.

Convenience: The 3 piece seat cover easily snaps on and off for cleaning without having to re-thread the harness or uninstall the car seat. To clean the cover, hand wash in cold water with mild soap and air dry. The shoulder straps and 3-position crotch strap are both adjustable from the front of the seat, and neither require rethreading. For parents wanting a seat useable throughout their child's car-seat years, the Compass True Fit is useable from birth through 65 lbs.

BENEFITS FOR JACK OR JILL

Little ones sit in luxury on the soft fabric, and enjoy that their special seat remains their own from birth. A well-padded seat keeps little tooshies happy on long car-rides, while generous interior room and features like an adjustable crotch strap and harness provide extra comfort as children grow.

Comfort: Side impact wings not only protect children, they also give sleepy heads a place to rest. General cushioning supports little bodies and invites contented car-rides - not screaming. More interior room gives kids extra comfort as they grow, and the adjustable crotch strap and shoulder straps provide a custom fit for children of all sizes. The infant insert offers cushy comfort to the tiniest passengers with a reversible soft micro-fiber and easy breathing nylon cover.

Safety:

  • 5-point harness up to 65 lbs forward-facing
  • Side Impact Tested
  • Sides completely lined with energy absorbing EPP foam
  • Meets or exceeds FMVSS 213

Comparisons: For a convertible car seat also useable up to 65 lbs with SIP, consider the Britax Boulevard. While the Boulevard can take your child from infancy through 65 lbs, the head rest is not removable and so the seat may be harder to fit rear-facing in smaller cars.

The cousin to the True Fit is The First Years C670 True Fit Premier Convertible Car Seat. The Premier keeps the True Fit's removable headrest, 65 lb harness weight limit, and easy installation, and adds an anti-rebound bar, 2-position forward recliner, and level indicator.

terrible system

We bought two of these for our twins after reading all of the great reviews and looking at them in the store. I absolutely HATE this car seat. Once we installed it rear-facing we could no longer access the harness adjuster. It was literally hidden underneath! Even if we pulled the strap out, we couldn't tighten it any more. I can't believe they made it so difficult to tighten and loosen. We are returning them today and still don't know what to buy instead....

Safe but BIG

My Son is still rear facing at age 2 and has 0 complaints about it. The seat belt occasionally rubs against his neck when tightening so you have to be careful about how he's holding his head when you pull the belt tight. It was also very difficult to install in our Forester and makes the front seat unusable. The CST commented on all the safety features of the car seat and was impressed by it.

I bought this seat for my daughter when she was 6 months old. She was in a graco snugride (only goes up to 22 lbs). I did tons of research on carseats and was torn between this one and the britax marathon. This seat simply had better reviews, and for good reason! I love this seat. It's easy to install, adjust and clean. I'm going to buy another one to put away for my next baby.

NHTSA gave Ellcellent reviews

Have always been a Britax fan myself but after much research it really is not the safest car seat as I once thought. Research for yourself I was shocked at the ratings of some of the seats we think are so safe. This is the new seat for us. www.odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls is where I learned about this seat and its high ratings. No better review in my own opinion. I am also willing to deal with any seat install easy or hard if its the safest one for my child! Thats a once in a great while investment of my time to install and a seat she is in everyday. Her safey is worth every minute of it. Guess thats why I have spent hours on here researching seats and spending time to tell everyone about it. Your baby is worth it too!

1 week after installion - in an accident!

Reviewer: Anonymous , Eastern Shore, MD Date: February 01, 2010
I work in a hospital and do childbirth classes. Although I'm not certified to put the seats in, I spend a lot of time expressing the importance to my students about picking a quality car seat that will allow baby to stay rear facing as long as possible and most importantly of all - getting it checked to make sure it's in right!!!!

Well, for once, I took my own advice - when I switched my 12 month old out of the infant seat and into the convertible car seat, I had it checked. Truth be known, I had it installed by them too - this car seat proved to be a little too tricky for me to even attempt to try putting it in. Although a bit of a toughy to install, even the car seat inspector was pleased with my choice. An hour later, my car seat was in and in TIGHT!

One week later, waiting to merge on the highway, a flatbed tow truck (the big kind) was watching something other than my car stopped in front of him and he slammed into me.

Thanks to insurance, I then had the opportunity to repurchase a car seat for my son. Although cumbersome to put in and not the least costly car seat on the market, I'm definitely going with this same seat.

My other kids had Britax Marathon. They are a bit pricier, no safer (at least from what I can find) and the biggest selling feature in favor of the True Fit is that I can adjust the straps and/or clean the cover without having to disassemble the entire seat.

I do like this seat!! And literally - would buy it again.

Comments from The Staff:

First Years True Fit

This car seat was worth every dollar I spent on it. I researched car seats for over a month and decided on this one. It makes a very comfy ride for your child. The only negative I can say about it is if you have more than one kid and a smaller car it is a little big. I have it in the middle of my VW Jetta and when other kids sit next to it there a little scrunched. I would buy this seat again!!

Great seat!

We bought this for our daughter about 5 months ago. I love it! It is a little difficult getting to the strap release while the seat is in the rear facing position, but not enough of a bother to switch it to forward facing...love that she can be RF until 35lbs! Extremely easy to install, both with LATCH or using the regular belt. I have installed it in our Rogue and in rentals (PT Cruiser, Chevy Cobalt, Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Corolla) and have never had a problem with it being too big (even rear facing with the headrest). I totally recommend it and plan on getting another when #2 arrives!

Easy Install, Fits My Small Car

4
Reviewer: Katy , Hammond, LA Date: April 09, 2009
We have tried many a car seat in our car, and I will say that this one was pretty straight forward and user friendly compared to others. I'll share my experience with you. First, I want to talk about the fit. I put both my 2.5 year old 33'' 25 pounder and my 4 year old who is 42'' and weighs 40 pounds. The 2 year old fit perfectly, and the straps were easy to adjust and tighten. I was very impressed with the way my four year old fit. Her head is nicely supported by the headrest. The straps adjusted easily, and best of all, she had room in the shoulder area. She wasn't crammed in there like she was in a Marathon. It actually seems to fit comfortably. There was one thing I noticed with this one. The crotch strap was a bit tight on the 4 year old. She was not uncomfortable, but there wasn't much room between the crotch strap and her body. There are two levels of tightness, I just wish I could see a third for older children. Okay, without the children in the seat, I immediately started to check out the seat itself. I noticed some things that set it apart from other convertible car seats. 1. The newborn cushions as well as the entire cover UNSNAP (oh yeah snaps - very cool) without having to un-thread and re-thread the straps. Taking the seat off and on is super super super easy. Oh, and by the way, the cover is comfortable. When my daughter's back is against the cover, it's not bulky or bumpy. It's smooth and comfy. 2. The straps are very easy to adjust. There are knobs on either side of the car seat that you pull and then you can move to whatever level you want without having to unthread it. 3. There is a removable headrest (to be put on for forward facing) which is both easy to put on and take off. Being able to take off the head rest enables the seat to fit rear facing in our Mazda Protege with my 6'2" husband sitting comfortably up front. I can't say how many convertibles we've tried to cram in that either didn't fit or they put the front passenger dangerously close to the dash. This one is perfect and it still goes to 65 pounds. 3. Installation was pretty straight forward and easy. Nothing difficult and complicated about it. I didn't like that there was only a tightener on one side (as compared to the Britax which has one on either side). However, tightening the seat was pretty easy. It's as snug as they come. I did have to get into the seat and somehow face the front seat to get the tightest fit, but whatever it takes. Personal experience notes: Before you tighten the seat, remember to snap the cover back to the seat and also pull the strap adjuster (which is on the front) up from under the seat so that you have access to it. Overall, I would say that I'm extremely happy with this seat. We will use this one for a long time. And I like the care that went into making it easy to use, clean, and install. I give it an A. If you are in need of a convertible, try this one (and if you're nervous, use the $5 return insurance). It's worth it. I love it over all of the ones I tried. I've tried, Evenflo, Britax Marathon, and the Radian XT. None fit as well as this one, and none were as easy to use either.
