Keep Baby Warm When It’s Cold Outside

When the temperature drops, keep baby safe and warm when traveling by car by following our tips for cold weather safety.

  • Don’t dress baby in bulky jackets when they’re riding in their car seat. Instead, buckle them in their car seat sans jacket and place the jacket backwards over the harness.

Why? A car seat’s harness works best when tightened to your child’s size. When an inch of downy goodness comes between your child and their car seat harness, the harness does not get tight enough for maximum safety.

To keep baby warm, make use of blankets or ingenious car seat covers like the Kiddopotamus Cozy Up, which fits over an infant car seat to keep your little bug snug.

  • Never leave a child alone in the car. As you know from early morning commutes, a car gets frigid after sitting in the cold. Babies and small children are less able to regulate their internal body temperature and so are at risk for hypothermia when the temperature suddenly drops.
  • Put a hat on ‘em. While all the heat won’t escape off the top of your little one’s head, a hat does keep more warmth in their little noggins. The JJ Cole BundleMe Hat looks cute and keeps their head’s warm. The BundleMe Hat comes in infant and toddler sizes.
  • Pack an emergency kit for your vehicle. The kit should include a flashlight, kitty litter to get you unstuck in snow, a shovel, nonperishable food, blankets, a radio, and extra batteries. Keep these items in your car at all times.
  • Warm up the car before hitting the road with baby. A car can be just as cold inside as it is outside, so give it a chance to warm up. Baby will thank you.
  • Add a bunting to your stroller for warmth. The JJ Cole BundleMe keeps your child’s toes toasty warm with soft fleece, making dashes from the car to the mall cozy, not cold.
  • Toss a weather cover over your infant car seat and stroller to guard against rain, sleet and snow. Many stroller brands make model-specific covers, or you can find covers from Sasha’s that fit almost any stroller brand. Sasha’s also makes an Infant Car Seat Rain and Weather Shield, perfect for parents who use their car seat with their stroller.
