Reviews for Sunshine Kids Monterey 2009 booster seat
nice seat with reservations

This is a great seat except for the anchors (which was why I purchased this seat in the first place). They are extremely short and almost impossible to unhook (they are not traditional latch clips) blindly. If you need to remove the seat regularly this is NOT the seat for you. Better for a car where it will be put in and stay there. The actual seat is nice. Nice support and ability to adjust. Hard to clean, though.

Excellent booster seat.

I just purchased the Sunshine Monterey Booster seat for my 3 y/o DD. This is for a second car. I needed a carseat that we could take travelling with us, when we fly out of state. This carseat arrived after we had left for our recent trip. We paid $50 for a rental filmsy booster seat, that did not fit my DD right. She kept complaining that the seatbelt was hurting her neck. We just installed the new booster seat. She is a tall 3 y/o. 40 inches tall. Very easy to insatll. I love the isofit anchors. I love the height adjustor. The seatbelt rests where it is suppose to. My other carseats are 2 Decathlons for the 1 y/o. And a Frontier in the minivan. I do wish the isofit anchors were a bit longer, and the directions were clearer.

Not Your Average Booster!
Reviewer: Andrea , Kansas City, MO

I was so nervous moving my 5yr old son out of his harnessed seat. But this booster has helped ease that anxiety. It is a deep and wide seat - which is great because my son has long legs and broad shoulders. I love the LATCH feature and the Monterey's ability not only to adjust in height but in width as your child grows. It is also well padded, the SIP for both the head and body is fantastic, and it is very sturdy. My son fell asleep the first time riding in it and there was no head flop issues either! We will be getting 2 more of these seats for our other vehicles.

Great Booster
Reviewer: Robin , Richmond, VA

My son is very tall for his age (he is 5 1/2) AND still falls asleep in the car on occasion. Two important factors I had to consider when purchasing a booster seat. After looking at many, I chose the Monterey. He is very comfortable in it. He has fallen asleep 3 times already while using it..and no head bobbing! I like that the sides can expand as well to support growth in the shoulders. Another great feature is that it CAN become a backless booster. Over all, a great purchase.

Great for Son and Daughter

I needed boosters for my 50lb, tall 5yr old son and 32lb, avg height 3yr old daugher---this is the only seat that I have found that works perfectly for both. The kids love their new seats. They are very comfortable. Now my husband wants two more for his car.

Great seat, but...
Reviewer: mhogan , Boston, MA
Date: June 15, 2009
This is a great seat and my son loves being able to buckle himself in. I originally purchased this seat because it was supposedly only 15" at the base so that I could fit 3 across in a wagon. But, it turns out that the armrests are so much further out (17") that I can't fit 3 across. If it wasn't for that, I would give it a 5 star rating.

Great Seat, Wide Base
Reviewer: Anonymous , Wilmington, NC

This is a great seat and I would buy more if it wasn't so wide. I find it is difficult to buckle when I put it in my husband's smaller car because the base is so wide.

Very pleased

I am very impressed with this booster. Our Marathon reached 6 years, so we needed to get a booster seat to replace it. My older son had Britax boosters and they were okay. I greatly prefer this one! It is great for falling asleep and I love that it latches to the car. It seems much more comfy than the Britax seats. Also, it was well rated for offgassing! I'm very happy we went with this seat.

Great seat

We moved to this booster from the Britex Parkway after Delta smashed it. This is a much better seat. It's very cushy for her. It's easy for her to get in and out of and stays put in the car thanks to the latch. She's a slim girl so the slim size of this fits her well. It fits well in my Volvo XC 90.

Sturdy and Comfy; Better than B.....
Reviewer: Anonymous , Centreville, VA

I have been a big Britax fan for its comfort and safety, and have Britax Monarch in my car for my 5-year-old. I was going to get the same seat for daddy's car, but the store did not carry one. I ended up "compromising" with this product. To my surprise, however, this product is as sturdy as Britax, yet costs less and offers more (flexible shoulder width, LATCH, etc.) Unlike other products, this booster fits up to 120 lbs and 63". I am 5'2" and 118 lbs; decided to try it for myself. It was very soft and comfortable. I was convinced my daughter will love riding in this seat even for the long trips. I wish I knew about this product earlier.

Excellent booster sit
Reviewer: Al Fernandez , Miami, Fl

We searched far and wide for an additional booster , after finding out the Britax Monarch had been retired. We own 1 Britax Monarch and 2 Britax Boulevard. I have to say the Monterey is a better fit for my 6 year old daughter her shoulders fit inside the shoulder wings as opposed to on the wings in the Britax. The quality of the plastic seems a notch better and the hip protection better as well. I wont forget to mention there is much more padding everywhere on the Monterey than in the Britax, plus the adjustable side bolsters. Don't get me wrong the Britax Monarch won the very tough German test in 2006 with a "very good" rating the only one not even Recaro came close. The next one up was the MaxiCosi Rodi XR. Overall very comfortable with my choice.

I LOVE IT! DAUGHTER LOVES IT!!
Reviewer: Maura , Boulder, CO
Date: February 25, 2009
Our not yet 4 yr. old daughter was outgrowing her Britax (41"tall and about 39 lbs) and I was torn between a new "convertible" or booster. I was worried about just using the seat belt (no harness), but our daughter is tall enough that it fits perfectly. With the ability to "lock" the seatbelt, I feel this is a very safe option. We love the side impact headrest and my daughter can still fall asleep in this booster, without "bobbing for apples". We also traveled by air with this seat, and it is a bit heavy and bulky, but breaks down nicely and is easy to install in most vehicles. Love that it has the latch feature too. Fabric is super soft and easy to clean. Aweseome seat!

Wondeful booster seat
Reviewer: Elizabeth , Hyde Park, VT
Date: February 09, 2009
We purchased this, after extensive research, for our soon to be five year old daughter who was outgrowing her Britax Marathon. We chose this primarily because we valued the fact that we can secure it in the car using the LATCH system, preventing it from toppling about in the back seat. We also thought that its adjustability was a nice feature. We've found it to be sturdy, comfortable, and easy to install. Our daughter thinks it's beautiful--even though we purchased the boring but practical grey version. She is very comfortable in it and loves having her own cup holders. As is typical, our experience with EliteCarSeats was topnotch. Our questions were promptly and helpfully answered and the seat shipped within two hours of our order placement. We would certainly recommend this booster seat to anyone interested in a high-quality, safe seat.

Positions Properly
Reviewer: Anonymous , Tampa, FL
Date: November 15, 2008
I shopped for a new booster after reading a recent article declaring several boosters, including our Compass, unsafe. The reason: the boosters didn't position the safety belt properly. From what I've read, the lap belt should stretch across the upper thigh area of the child, and the shoulder belt should be positioned across the shoulder, not touching the neck. The Monterey positions both straps perfectly. And almost as important, my child loves it!

A Great Buy!!
Reviewer: Gigi , Charlotte, NC

Do it for yourself and for the kids! I feel so much better after buying two of these seats for my grandboys. Knowing that they were outgrowing their carseats, I was worried about them going into booster seats. Finding this seat was a great relief. They love the cup holders and how big the seat is and I love the head wings to protect their little head and neck. I love the overall look of the seat too! I feel that they will be safer in this seat.

The Right Choice
Reviewer: Laurie , Denver, CO
Date: June 08, 2008
My 6 yr old son and I were recently in an accident and I had to replace our Britax Parkway. Sadly, I discovered the Parkway has been retired by Britax. I searched high and low for a quality booster for weeks and found that no stores actually stock the higher end boosters. I was shocked and dismayed. How are you supposed to check the fit of your child and car if you can't get your hands on the real thing? Being 7 mths pregnant, I was very anxious about finding the right booster seat that fit my son and our car correctly. I found the Britax Monarch and the Monterey so comparable that my husband ordered both so we could check the fit with an inspection station. (Elite offers return shipping insurance so returning the unchosen seat was a breeze.) Both seats were easy to install, but the Monterey's base was a much better fit for our car. I felt very good about the ease with which I was able to install it and love that I don't have to seat belt the Monterey into the car when my son is not with me. The side impact protection the Monterey offers puts my mind at ease. It offers not only the EPS foam from the head rest to the hips, but is reinforced with aluminum. This seat is solidly made!! My son loves the new seat and can buckle himself in by himself almost every time. The adjustments that the Monterey offer will allow my son to be better protected for a long time. And you can't put a price on that!! Not to put the Monarch down, but it was too narrow in the shoulder/torso area and the arm rests were so close to the seat that I had as hard a time threading the seat belt through them as my son. The bottom line is that the Monterey was the right choice for us. And I cannot thank Elite enough for making this purchase as quick and simple as it was. Customer Service was friendly, knowledgeable and courteous!! You don't find that often!!

Love the Monterey
Reviewer: Anonymous , Winter Haven, FL
Date: May 31, 2008
We decided to purchase the Monterey for our almost 8 yr old son. He weighs 70 lbs and is 52 inches with a 18.75 torso. He has alot of growing room left in the Monterey. He says it is extremely comfortable and he has already fallen asleep in it twice in 10 days. The main reason we decided to put him back in a HBB vs. a LBB is so he could sleep without the seatbelt moving out of the correct position. He loves the wings to put his head on. He rides in the 3rd row of our MDX so there are no latch back there. When this is handed down to his brother it will be in the middle row and then it will be used with latch. The seat is well padded and he had no problem with buckling it himself. I would not hesitate to buy this seat again. In fact if our youngest outgrows his regent before his brother outgrows the Monterey I will be buying another one. The 22 in. belt guides are the highest that I have found and the SIP is awesome. THis seat is heavy but that's about the only problem I can find with it.

LOVE IT!

bought the monterey (red) for my eldest son (almost 9yo) who has outgrown the turbo booster back. my son has signifigantly more room in the monterey til he reaches the belt guides. & even when he does outgrow the monterey i have a couple children it can be passed down to. LOVE the deep wings for the extra protection & LOVE deep headwings for sleep support as well as side impact protection. my son preferred these headwings over the parkway (the parkway is more angled in close to his neck). the seat is nice & deep to support long legs too.
we have no LATCH in our current vehicle so no comment there
this seat is PERFECT for the tall children that NEED the high back support still.
it s a GREAT buy!

I just recieved 3 of the pink/gray for my 5 year old triplet daughters and I love this seat. The shoulder belt sits perfectly across the shoulder. The head wings are perfect for naping & safety. I love the reclining feature! These seats will make our long rides so much more pleasant. Great customer service from Elitecarseats.com! I will recommend this seat and site to everyone!

Great Booster, similar to Britax Parkway.
Reviewer: Anonymous , Papillion, Nebraska
Date: April 23, 2008
I received my Monterey yesterday, surprisingly it was in stock at Elitecarseats. We are using it to replace a Radian65 for our 63.5 pound 6 year old boy. He really likes the seat, and it was a breeze to install in our 2000 Honda Odyssey. (LATCH was a non issue, since the Odyssey didn't have it until 2001). My only quibble is that he tends to sit too far forward to see out the side windows, similar to what he does in his Parkway in my husband's car. I don't know how good the side impact wiil be if the wings obscure his view so much that he won't sit back. Other than that, it seems to be a great seat that will last at least until he is 8 years old, the legal age for moving out of a booster in Nebraska. And unlike the Parkway, the back comes off. Perhaps we can convince him to stay in it past 8 that way.

FANTASTIC BOOSTER!!!
Reviewer: Jana Smith , Colorado Springs, CO
Date: April 22, 2008
We got and installed our new Sunshine Kids Monterey booster seat. It was very easy to install, and is secured snugly in the car with the ISOFAST connectors. My daughter absolutely loves the seat. She feels like such a big girl now using the seat belt. Since the seat is secured with a LATCH system we did not encounter the same issues we had with other boosters, which was that they tipped over. The seat is very soft with lots of cushion. Can't say enough good about it.
