We love the RECARO Signo convertible car seat!!! We bought two for our children and I do not regret paying this much for the safety and comfort of my children. I would highly recommend this car seat for anyone that wants their children safe and comfortable. The ONLY con is it sits up high, thats the only reason for the 4 stars. I will not own anything else!!!!!

RECARO Signo convertible - BEST seat ever made.

I bought a RECARO Signo a year ago, for my 1-yr-old. This was my 2nd Recaro , 1st being a RECARO Young Sport , which I've owned for 5 years. I absolutely LOVE Recaro seats. I've compared a ton of seats, from Britax, to SAFEGUARD, to Eddie Bauer. I've taken both of my kids to the local store and strapped each one of the kids into each one of the seats. After much hands on research, I've concluded that currently there are NO seats that come close to the protection Recaro provide. Here is my take: Positives: 1. Unrivaled side impact protection. From head, to shoulders, to hips, to upper legs. Both of my kids, in their respective seats, have all of the side protection exactly were it needs to be, to be most effective in case of an accident. This is after multiple adjustments as the kids have been growing. 2. Besides having the side protection positioned where it needs to be, the seat provides a much better level of protection. To understand what I mean, go to your local store, get a seat of any brand, and using your hand and a bit of force, try flexing the side "wings" of the side protection. You'll see how flimsy other seats are. Recaros utilize a much stronger plastic that still allows some flex dissipating load forces during an impact. 3. Once the seats are installed they don't move an inch and I do mean no movement, not even a 1/16". It is easy to install them, as all the latch hardware is well designed and engages with a positive click when it locks. 4. If the seat is installed properly, when kids fall asleep, their heads DO NOT bob around and fall forward or to the side causing stretching and twisting of the neck. This is due to the positioning of the head restraint, as close to the head as possible. 5. The easiest seats to adjust the harnesses, or take off the cover to be washed. All the belts are easy to pull tight and release. The buckle is massive, easy to operate and has a very positive feel when it locks. Try changing the harness position on the Eddie Bauer seat or taking off the cover to be washed. I had the "pleasure" of trying to remove a cover on the Eddie Bauer seat. I had the whole seat apart to the point of unthreading all the belts (from their buckles), disconnecting the seat from it's base (this required tools) and still the cover wouldn't come off. After an hour I gave up and told them to get a different seat. I saw what the problem was but there was no way around it, other than cutting off straps that held the cover in place. 5. Wanting to keep my kids in a 5-point harness for as long as possible I found that Recaros provide one of the tallest back rests. I think that the only seat that'll let you keep a kid in a 5-point harness longer is a SAFEGUARD, but check out their prices and level of side protection. I will go to a real booster like a Recaro Start as soon as my oldest outgrows the 5-point harness. Negatives: It's a big seat and does take up a lot of room in the back seat. My wife can not install the seats on her own, but then again, she couldn't install any other seat. Other than that I can't think of any other negatives. Being as big as these seats are, they both fit with no problems in the back seat of our 3-series BMW, leaving enough space between them and on the sides for storage of kids' stuff. I did read that people had problems with the straps twisting. I'm not sure why but I hadn't encountered this problem. My buckles do twist around once in a great while, but it is an absolute breeze to straighten them out, as the slots in the buckles are a bit wider than in the other seats. I had a very tough time untwisting belts in a Britax and in an Edie Bauer seat, as their buckles are much more narrow. Take my advice for what it's worth. But after 5 years of using Recaros, the only reason I decided to spend my valuable time to share information with others is because these are truly outstanding products and I'm back to buy two more seats, for the grandparents.

Safety First

It blows my mind that people are fussing about twisting straps! The safety of the RECARO Signo is just amazing. The magnitude of this seat is second to none. I have 5 children (ages 1 to 16) so I know a little about car seats, and I wish that I had known about this seat for my other kids. I had the Britax for two of the other children, and, in my opinion, the "sturdiness" and safety features of the RECARO seat far exceed that of the Britax (and any other brand for that matter). I can put my 1 year old in the Signo and know that she is safe. I don't care if the straps twist or not....I laugh in the face of twisted straps! My baby girl is safe and that is ALL I'm concerned about. If you want your child safe, buy this car seat. You won't be disappointed!

Huge Seat!

Reviewer: Anonymous , Tampa, FL Date: October 24, 2008
I spent months looking for the perfect seat. My daughter was outgrowing her Peg Perego and I had hoped that I could keep her rear facing until she was at least a year old. I had a hard time getting this seat installed in my 2002 Santa Fe. I used to be certified to install car seats for a rental car company. It's not rocket science and I do know what I am doing. But, I don't have the LATCH system. That would have been a snap! When I put my 10 month old 19 lb daughter in this seat, rear facing, her knees nearly hit her chin! There was no way for her to sit in this seat rear facing. I reinstalled the seat forward facing and she is fine. I REALLY wish there was another way for me to keep her rear facing, but I guess she is too tall at 30 inches. There are a few drawbacks to this seat. The first is its massive size. I have also had a few problems with the straps twisting. Recaro could easily solve this problem with slightly thicker, not wider, straps. And exactly how am I supposed to have my child rear facing with her knees in her chest? She was only starting to touch the back of the cars seat with her feet in her infant seat. I can't see how I'll be able to use this seat up to 8 years old or 70 lbs. The seat sits so high that I'm sure hear head will be touching the top of the car by then. On the positive side, my daughter hates car seats even as an infant but she has fallen asleep in this seat many times. The padding on the straps has become the perfect little pillow. She likes her big girl seat. We will be traveling with this seat by plane next month. We've had offers to borrow a seat at our destination, but as my daughter is painfully shy and wary of new things, we wouldn't dream of putting her in any other seat but her Recaro.

It even fits in a GTI!

I really can't believe it but the Recaro Signo fits in my 2 door VW GTI (rear-facing). It installed in about 30 seconds. In the center position the front seats can still be adjusted comfortably with some room to spare. (my husband and I are both 5'9") In a couple of months when my daughter moves to forward facing, I think the signo will fit even better. I love it.

Best car seat I've ever used!

I'm not one to leave reviews, but I just had to on this one. My eldest is 14, youngest 5 months, so I have used many different car seats over the years. For the 5 month old, I started with the baby trend infant seat (hated it!), switched to the radian 80 (mediocre), then finally to the Recaro Signo. I cannot say enough good about it. It was the only one where the bottom straps didn't land on dd's thighs. It fits so perfectly, no twisted straps, very cushy, soft. The infinite adjust feature is wonderful.I just love it.

THE MUST HAVE CAR SEAT

Reviewer: Aimee , Woodstock, IL Date: August 23, 2008
I researched a lot of seats prior to purchasing. The RECARO Signo convertible car seat is superior to all others. First, it comes from a company that produces safety seats for auto racing..I think they know a little something about safety. The SIP is an amazing feature, easy to install..awesome LATCH buckle system---no more pinched fingers for me! My 11mo old son fits well, easy to adjust the straps...have not had any twisting issues. My advice would be to not keep them too loose when child not in the seat. Absolutely worth every penny. You can not put a price on the safety of your child.

Love our RECARO Signo

Reviewer: Anonymous , New Mexico Date: August 19, 2008
The RECARO Signo car seat has far exceeded our expectations; we are more then pleased. My husband is an EMT so safety is our first priority especially when choosing a car seat for our children. My 3 year old daughter loves her pink Signo (she was 2 when we purchased it), she often falls asleep in it and her head doesn't flop over like it did in her other car seat. We have never had any problems with getting her in or out of the seat or with the straps twisting as others have reported. We also haven't had any problems seeing over the seat while driving and I'm only 5'1". As far as installing the seat, the directions in the manual are very easy to follow and it's very simple (we have to move our car seats from one car to another about 4x's per week), once the seat is installed it is very sturdy and won't budge and inch. Another reason we chose this seat was that it is recommended that your children remain in a car seat with a 5 point harness for as long as possible, in this case our daughter will be able to use the seat up to 70 lbs. We made the mistake of ordering my younger son a Britax. We wanted a seat specifically for infants but he hates it and the material makes his skin break out, a complete waste of money for us. We will be ordering a Signo for our little man promptly! I highly recommend this Signo to all who value safety and comfort for there little ones.
