great seat for pickup truck

I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma with an "access cab" (small, forward facing rear seats and small rear doors that swing open opposite of the front doors). I agonized over finding an infant seat that would fit. I went to a big box store and tried every seat they had - the Graco Snugride was the only one that fit safely and at the right angle. (Even the Snugride 32 was too big - it had to be the regular Snugride.) The seat has been wonderful with the truck, our station wagon, and our stroller. I highly recommend it, especially for pickups and small cars where space is at a premium.

Thrilled!!!

My husband and I have been researching
infant car seats, trying to find something that is neutral (to use for the next baby too) and simple (the colors and patterns can be really tacky). This is the PERFECT version. We chose the Platinum color -- which is really a champagne beige and black combo. I have a black car with tan leather interior and this matches perfectly! I didn't want anything that would stand out too much.
The best part is the foam cushion interior. So many of the car seats felt really thin to my husband. He wanted something that would be cozy for his little girl. This one is perfect. The padding is fantastic and she is sure to be happy.

Great seat

Well, I have nothing to compare it to, but so far, we really like the Graco SnugRide. It has great safety ratings, it's not too heavy and it looks good, too. For the price, I think it's a great buy. I just have one caution and one complaint. Be aware when installing the base into the car, make sure to get the angle right. We didn't at first, and it was no good! Our son's head would fall completely forward when we put him in it. It was so sad. But it's fixed and now it's great! And my only complaint is a minor one. The pieces that hold the sunshade together are cheaply made. I feel like it's poorly constructed and it doesn't really stay together the way it's supposed to. But it does the job, meaning that the sunshade does work, it just slides around a bit. But for us, it's not a deal-breaker, just a bit obnoxious.

Weak Base
Reviewer: Anonymous ,

The seat may be great, but the bases are flimsy. That is right FLIMSY. When you attach them to your vehicle with the seat belt system (not latch) you will see the plastic begin to give way and start turning white (remember how that happens when you stress plastic right before it snaps. At this point you are frustrated because the base sits wobbly, flimsily (that word again) and you cannot tighten any further without the thing blowing up in your face. The seat is fine, as far as seats go. I am a father of three children, twins included, and if it wasn't for the recall (Spring 2008)on the combi system, we would have gone with it as our experience with this system was really good...sturdy, light weight, and sits solidly in place in the car. The only reason I wrote this was to give another perspective on the love fest going with this product at this site.
Comments from The Staff:
Thank you so much for your review. I would agree with you that the plastic bases of the Graco seem to be a bit on the "cheap" side but it is one of the more affordable options out there for a reason. That is not saying that this seat is not good or safe to use, however. These car seats are upheld to the same testing standards as all others and from a safety perspective are just as safe as the more expensive Peg Perego Primo Viaggio
or Britax Companion
which use more rigid plastics in their bases. I'm a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician and I can't even tell you how many Graco Snugride's I've seen, installed and inspected in the past 5 years - not once have I had to tighten the seat belts so much that I was causing visible stress to the plastic base itself. I would be concerned if you needed to tighten that much in order to get a good install and may actually recommend changing installation from belt to LATCH or switching seat positions or even car seats. At the very least I'd take it to your local Seat Check Location to have someone else take a look-see. Sorry to jump on the "love fest". I just try to serve as the mediator here and while it may sound like I'm touting the Snugride I save my true love for the Chicco KeyFit 30
!
Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions or concerns. Thank you again for the review!

Correcting the Correction

Sean from Greendale, IN you may have some of your details backward. i say "may" because it depends on whether or not *this* article, that my information comes from, is accurate.
http://www.consumersearch.com/www/family/baby-car-seats/
You said that Consumer Reports reported crash results at 70 mph that were actually at 38 mph, but according to the article, it was the other way around. They reported at 38 mph an impact equivalent to 70 mph, which made for "faulty testing" since the car seats were only supposed to be tested at 38 mph, and therefore any car seat not passing shouldn't be harshly judged for the results of that test. But in my book, a 70 mph impact is possible -- esp. driving on US-VA Rte. 7 during rush hour, when irresponsible selfish women are putting on eye-liner at 70 mph and men are reading the newspaper as they drive to work. If the SnugRide and only one other car seat really were the only two that stayed in place at such harsh testing conditions, to me, that suggests a product that could potentially be superior.
i'm only giving the SnugRide three stars because there are car seats out there like my last-used Evenflow Portabout V that can have the handle pushed down to the lowest position one-handed (invaluable if you have more than one little one), and i find that feature quite desirable now that i've experienced it. Addtionally, i bought a SnugRide in Jan. for a child i was expecting at the end of Feb., and i mailed the registration card as soon as i got it home. When a recall was issued for my type of SnugRide on Mar. 15, i didn't find out about it until June when i happened to be reading that month's edition of Consumer Reports in a dr's office waiting room! Thank goodness nothing happened in that time, as the recall was for car seats that would not stay in the bases in case of crash. Of course, i was using the base! And of course, i was angry!
We're expecting our fourth child now, and i will likely buy a SnugRide anyway, but whatever car seat you buy, i just suggest you periodically check for recalls, in case yours gets lost in the mail, or is never mailed out.
i posted this correction because i saw that many people are finding your information helpful, but it may not be accurate. Then again, the article i posted may be the inaccurate one. People who are worried just have to do their homework about it.

Safe & Secure...& Pretty

We purchased the Graco Snug Ride for our third child after having worn out a previous Graco with two prior children. I love the fit. I love the textures and cleanable surfaces. The secure feeling helps RFS feel snug while strapped into her seat. We have even used it as a last resort upright sleep spot! All of the straps are easily adjusted and the bar makes carrying easy as well. If I could change anything I would re-engineer the movement mechanism on the bar to make the release tight but easier to work. The seat also locks securely into our stroller frame (not a Graco Travel System) and the base installation was a breeze. We bought the pink version. I highly recommend this if you are looking for a girl seat without all the frilly stuff. The pink is just right and not over the top. The black trim balances it perfectly. We gave this a five star rating because we truly have no complaints only compliments! Thank you Graco for the best infant seat we have yet to use!

Love this seat! Our daughter was a 1 lb & 12 in. preemie-She came home at 3 mos old & 4 lbs & 15.5 inches, our other seat was huge on her-then we got this as a gift-so much better! She's now almost 2 yrs old and 19 lbs & 28 inches-low muscle tone due to cerebral palsy but this seat still fits-and her head wont fall forward-which is nice-very sturdy, easy to install- we will be sad when she outgrows this because it has worked so well for us.

Well worth the price

I have used this seat in Metropolitan for both of my boys (born in '04 and '06). They were 6# 2oz and 7# at birth. The double head support was great for the early days; head supports removable as child grows. The attached boot and blanket were also great for WI winters. Sunshade is great to keep the sun out of their eyes in the car and to shield wind and rain outside of the car. When used with a Quattro stroller, it's kept my child dry in an unexpected rain. The seat is easy to take apart and re-assemble with a little practice. The cover is machine washable and very durable. I wish the handle could be turned 90 degrees on top, but that's the only wish I have for this seat. A little pricey, but well worth it when you compare the cushioning to other infant seats. I'm very satisfied with my purchase.
