The best

After searching, trying out, debating and finally purchasing the safegaurd carseat we have been extremely pleased. Our 6 year old daughter had outgrown her seat (especially when wearing outer wear or long dresses) and we knew we needed a new seat. We reviewed and compared the Britax regent, Recaro signo and como, and the radian all of which had redeeming factors. The selling point for us on the safeguard was the fact that it had a 3 place automatically adjusting crotch strap. Our daughter is petite and not very tall for her age so all of the seats would be great for those, but she is extremely long wasted and the crotch strap would ride her in uncomfortable places. This was especially important as our family wears dresses almost daily and the extra material made the problem worse. Having said all that we have been very pleased with the carseat. It is comfy, has plenty of space to grow both height and width wise, and looks great too. We like the fact that it is so easy to loosen and tighten (with just a grip lever and then some knobs for extra tightness). Our daughter is able to almost loosen and tighten it herself, which will be a boon in later years as the family expands. The absolutely only down side I see is that there isn't a cup holder, and that the knobs to tighten can sometimes be a LITTLE hard to turn. Hopefully down the road they will change both of these, but even if they don't I will purchase this seat again for my son when he outgrows his carseat. I would highly recommend the seat. Oh, and as to those reviews that the lever won't tighten the carseat sometimes--we have found that that is only the case when it hasn't been installed correctly(as in moving from a vehicle and not paying attention.) By the way the installation is a dream--fast, easy, a built in locking mechanism so need for a locking clip and if you still need help a video. This is one purchase we have no buyers remorse about and love. Try it you will love it!

It is so easy

I ordered this seat almost a year ago from EliteCarSeats.com to take the place of a Britax convertible seat for our 4 year old. The first thing I noticed is that it is huge. The size is similar to the Regent and I debated to pay less and get the Regent. I like the fact with this seat that I do not have to feed any shoulder straps as they get taller. I simply twist a nob and it does it for me. The installation is so easy and worth the price. This chair does not move and I shake it hard to make sure it is installed correctly. I use the LATCH system and tether it in our minivan. The only thing I have noticed about it (that I don't like) is that the straps get twisted relatively easily. I got the black seat and it is very sharp looking and I never have noticed the lint until another review pointed it out. Not an issue. Overall a great seat and would buy again. I have ordered Radian 80s for my husband's truck and for travel for our two youngest children. This one is way to heavy to tote through an airport.

Great Seat Hard to Install

Reviewer: Anonymous , Willcox, AZ Date: December 13, 2007
This is a great seat but it took me about three weeks and many hours of aggravation to install it in my car properly. I have an older Mercedes with hard leather seats. The feed for the seat belt is hard for me even with my small hands to get the belt threaded through. In order to get it so it didn't slide all over the place have to put a very sticky rug backing or a mattress egg cushion under it. I took it on a trip an had it in four different cars. The only one I was able to get it into properly was one that had a latch system in it. It installed easily in just a few second with the latch. Overall I like the seat but I don't need the extra stress when I am depending on other people for transportation to get this installed properly.

Safeguard

We were looking for a 5-point harness seat for our 2y10mo old daughter. We tried the Recaro Como first. She was already on the second to last shoulder strap setting. The seat is also quite narrow. She fit into the seat, but she did not have much room to grow (especially in the shoulder area). The SIP wings would definitely provide great protection. We returned the seat because there was just not enough room for future growth. We then ordered the Safeguard seat. The seat is definitely well built with the aluminum frame, but it is heavy. The latch attachment buckle system is excellent. It is the best attachment scheme to the anchors that I have ever seen. The seat is large enough that our daughter has room to grow, so we should be able to use this seat until she is 65 lb. The adjustable seat back is very handy, but I have found that the seatback will rattle when your child is not in the car seat. We do like it because we have her in the center on the back seat and we can still see out the back window. As she grows and the seat extends we will probably have to move her seat. The retractor system does not work the best. Safeguard says the retractor system will work better once the seat back is raised. I would also like to see the velcro on the straps (Brittax uses these). The velcro keeps the buckle from dropping down to the bottom and will also hold the straps while you load your child to keep them from twisting. The rear tether strap has a nice feature where it attaches onto the frame for storage. It can also be used as a shoulder strap for airport travel. All being said, the seat is well built and should last until your child is 65 pounds. If Safeguard would add velcro straps and improve the retractor system, it would be the ultimate car seat. I will say that Safeguard is continuing to improve the car seat. The first seat we purchased had a velcro seam where the bottom seat cushion met the back. They have since eliminated this seam.

Best Seat Ever

We looked for months before finally making a decision on our daughter's first forward facing car seat. This is by far the best seat available on the market. It is very user friendly and easy to install. Our daughter is always comfortable and has no trouble sleeping in this seat during long trips. We have a 2007 Jetta and thought this seat might be too big for the center of the back but it fits just fine. When she gets a little older, we can slide it over to the side and she will still have plenty of room. I have recommended this seat to everyone I know.

Didn't fit

I bought the SafeGuard seat after reviewing car seats for months! When it arrived I was very excited. The seat met all of my expectations and more. It was very solid, and the latch system was superb, very easy to install. The biggest problem was that I couldn't get it to fit securely in my car. I have an XC90, whose headrests don't move, and because of that I found that the seat moved an inch or two from side to side. If I had placed the seat in the center position it probably would have worked perfectly, but I didn't want to do that because I have a built in booster in that position, which I use all the time. Another thing to be aware of with this seat is that it is extremely large and bulky--my 3 year old (37 pounds and 38 inches)was able to fully place his feet on the seat in front. I can't imagine what it would be like in a sedan. That said, I highly recommend the seat in terms of safety and quality, and I wish that I could have kept it. It just seemed silly to pay such a high price for a seat that I didn't feel was secure. If I end up having another child, however, I would definitely consider getting a Safeguard again and placing it in the center position in my Volvo. I ended up returning my seat and getting a Radian seat instead, which I love. The EliteCarSeats people that I worked with were wonderful and helped me immensely! They were a lifesaver! Thank you EliteCar Seats!

SafeGuard Child Seat

Reviewer: Anonymous , Point Roberts, WA Date: November 06, 2007
I recently purchased and installed this car seat during a trip to my parents' home. It was extremely easy to install (Grandpa did it by himself in just a minute or two, and he has no experience with car seats!). I also used it on the airplane for 9 hours during our flights home. Again, I had no difficulty installing it on the airplane. My 6 year old found the seat quite comfortable and was very happy to sit in the car seat during the long flights and in the car. It was not too heavy for me to haul by myself along with carry-on luggage through the airports. It is no more bulky in the car or plane than any of the other car seats we have used (Britax Wizard and Boulevard, and Eddie Bauer). The sturdy construction and attention to detail is fabulous in this seat. We are very pleased with our purchase.

Simply the Best

The pictures of this car seat simply do not do it justice, it has to be seen to be appreciated. The real strength of this seat lies in its simplicity. It was very easy to install in a Volvo XC90 and my son loves the extra room and comfort. The fit is secure and the seat does not give at all. It is also nice to know that this car seat will be his last and that we can keep him in a five point harness a little longer. Our son is very tall for his age and this seat fits him perfectly.

Very disappointed

Reviewer: Susan , Raleigh, NC Date: October 18, 2007
After agonizing over all the car seats out there, I decided on the safe guard because of it's excellent safety features and numerous positive reviews. I am disappointed to say that although it does appear to be a very safe and solid car seat, we cannot get it to fit securely in our car. I have an XC 90, which does not have removable headrests. I don't know if that's the problem or not, but the tether does not appear to hold the seat securely so it moves at least 2-3 inches at the top part of the seat. The latch system works well at the base of the seat, but for this price I want my seat to be 100% secure and not move an inch. I also find that the seat is very high, so much so that when my 3 year old son is sitting in it (he's 38 inches) he's almost tall enough to touch the ceiling of the car. How safe can that be? I'm really disappointed because I had such high expectations. I'm not sure where I'm going to go from here......!

Comments from The Staff:

I am so sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the SafeGuard Child Seat. It is true still to this day that not every car seat will fit in every vehicle, unfortunately. I have a couple of suggestions.
1. Did you try taking it to a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician to insepct? They may be able to help get that solid fit you are looking for. You can find a technician in your area clicking here and entering your zip code.
2. If you still are not able to get the seat to fit, we have a great No Worries Returns and Exchanges policy.
3. I always like to promote the sharing of this information on a great website - CarSeatData.org. This website is the only source that has information on car seat and vehicle compatibility and is completely built with information submitted by parents like yourself. It's also a great place for you to go to find out if there may be any compatibility issues with any other seats you may be considering if the SafeGuard Child seat does not work for you.
Again, I am truly sorry to hear that this seat did not work for you. As a Certified Technician myself, I have always had nothing but great experiences with this seat installing it in multiple vehicles. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do to help.

Thank you,
Kelly
