We were able to use the Graco Safe Seat up until our baby's first birthday. He was still ok for weight but at 32 inches we needed to move on. Yes, it was getting heavy BUT we now miss the ease of the portable car seat. Overall great purchase and very convenient if you get an extra base.

Buyer Beware

Although I love the fact that this car seat accommodates my big baby, it is very heavy, especially when lifting it in and out of an SUV. It fits fine, but has to be in the middle or else my average size husband (5'10")cannot put his seat back far enough to drive (or sit comfortably if he is in front passenger seat.)Additionally, the all weather boot DOES NOT fit snuggly over the baby's legs as suggested in the pictures. It is held on loosely by little elastic loops that loop around the belt hooks. It barely covers the baby's feet, and my baby kicks his feet out and over the boot altogether. (Great idea, but poor design.) The canopy is constantly falling backwards and getting stuck on the base or on the stroller (that I purchased separately) so I usually just take it off. Additionally, the attractive metallic material does not breath. On a comfortable day, my baby is drenched in sweat and often screaming, I believe due to the material. Unless you are sure that you will need a carrier for a large baby, I would consider an alternative.
Comments from the Staff
Relative to most other infant car seats (which range in weight from 7.7 - 16.4 lbs) the Safe Seat Step 1's carrier is no heavier than the average of about 10 lbs. See our infant car seat comparison chart for more details on the weight and size of the car seat we carry. The Safe Seat Step 1 is a bit larger than other infant seats, but that's a reflection of it's high weight capacity of 30lbs. Most infant seats top off at 22lbs. It won't fit in every vehicle, but the center of the backseat is the recommended position to install any infant seat. As for your issues with the materials of your Graco car seat, note that the company is known for products that are safe, reliable, and economically priced - not necessarily of flawless quality.Thank you very much for the review

Love this Seat, heavy or not

I got this seat for my baby shower last year and my son is now 11 months old, and 31 inches long. How out of luck would I have been had I gotten the smaller infant seat. I was originally going to go with a convertible right out the door, but being a first time mom I didn't realize how foolish of an idea that was. I wouldn't be able to take my son into the grocery store or restaurants until he was able to stand up. The seat is not really all that heavy. You have to consider that you are adding whatever your child already weighs to it. By itself the seat weighs about 15lbs, but is so convenient and easy to use and install and adjust that I forget about the weight. You won't be carrying the seat long distances anyway I assure you. AS far as being safe, I haven't been in an accident with this seat, but my son is secure and the seat doesn't budge an inch. I am in the process of choosing my toddler seat and I am pretty certain that I am going to the Graco Safe Seat Step 2 Toddler Car Seat. I will use my Safe Seat step one for my next child, I got the Hemingway print which I think is perfect for boy or girl.

A great investment....

Hi, I bought this car seat for baby #3 he isn't born yet so I can't say how he'll fit but just by looking, it will be a great match. Our 1st Son out grew his infant seat at 9 months so when I saw that this one will hold them safely up to 30lbs, I had to get it. I loved how it looks it also matches our Graco stroller that we bought for child #1, so that saves us from haveing to buy a new stroller too. I don't think it feels any heavier than any other infant seat and in reality how far are you going to carry it anyway from the car to a store for a shopping cart or to the trunk for the stroller? Just think, if you think it's to heavy just keep switching arms and you'll build up your arm muscles. A great way to start loosing those pounds you gained during pregnancy. I think it's great and can't wait to put our little bundle in it and bring him home.

This was purchased for my daughter's 2nd child. I received the product just days after ordering--impressive. The base/seat is simple to install and is lightweight. They're extremely pleased.

Great for big babies

I wish they made this seat 10 years ago when my eldest was an infant. He hit 20 pounds at about 3 1/2 months and this would have been wonderful. I bought this seat knowing that I have large babies (2 of them, almost 10 pounds at birth) and wanted to get the maximum use of a carrier seat. I will say that with an over 20 pound child in the seat it is a monster to carry. But, for the convenience factor, I still think it is worth it. I use the seat in my Graco stroller and in shopping carts. It is great to not have to wake a sleeping baby to just pop into a store for a few things.
Also, because it can be used with or without the base, it enables me to use keep the base in my van and install it without the base in my husband's car and other people's vehicles with ease. That is something that would be more effort with a convertible seat.
BTW, I see many people who use their infant seats with babies who are over 20 pounds and longer than the maximum recommendations. So, I think that it was smart for Graco to make a seat designed for larger infants. Anything to help babies stay rear-facing longer is good. Rear-facing is the safest postition for babies to ride in for as long as their car seat Mfr. guidelines allow. One year and 20 pounds is the MINIMUM standard for turning them around.

We purchased the Graco Safe Seat after much research. The print I have is "Roxy", which is similiar to Meteror and the other "shimmery" fabrics. OK...honestly, big, heavy seat. Very awkward to carry. Fits in our Yukon, but if you like to sit with the front seat all the way back, you can't get the seat in and out without scraping the back of the front seat (not good with leather interior). I think the "Safe Seat" are all pretty much the same except for fabric options. Take note: if you purchase one that has the "shimmery" metallic looking fabric, beware! The fabric is some weird industrial polyester or something. It looks very trendy but it makes my son hot and sweaty. Same complaints on other sites. We live near the beach in California, so it gets warm, and so does my son, enough to where he will wake up from deep sleep because he is miserable. My bad for purchasing the seat for safety and how cool it looked (I'm not talking temperature...and why would I buy one that is black? DUH!). I bought the BOB Revolution jogging stroller with the infant seat adapter, so this seat is used in conjunction as my PRIMARY STROLLER!!! Cool, but since he pretty much hates the seat, I am stuck. Now that he is getting older, he actually sreams as soon as his little rump touches the fabric. I no longer take him inside places in the seat unless he is sleeping. I could go on forever but my verdict is: the seat is great for safety and it's large size limits. It stinks for it's size, heaviness and fabric. Just choose a fabric that is cotton. As for the people who say the straps are too short: you have to adjust both the length AND the side straps for the width for it to fit properly arund baby's waist. It took me a little while, but I finally figured it out.
