Our Review of the SafeGuard Go booster seat

On Sale for $134.99! Regularly priced at $199.99. Save $65 (32%)

The SafeGuard Go is an innovatively engineered combination car seat with distinct safety advantages over a belt-positioning booster. Traditional youth / toddler combination car seats are quite bulky, and function first as a harnessed forward-facing seat, then a belt-positioning booster.

The soft-backed SafeGuard Go offers the same safety benefits of those seats, but in a more compact and travel-friendly package, making it ideal for on-the-go families. This combination seat from SafeGuard provides the highest harness weight capacity of any combination car seat yet: 60 lbs. in the 5-point harness, and 100 lbs. as a backless booster seat.

Important Installation Information: As a 5-point harness booster, the SafeGuard Go requires the use of the Top Tether for installation - either in combination with vehicle seat belts, or Lower Anchors. As a belt-positioning booster, the SafeGuard Go uses your vehicle's seat belts.  If you intend to use the 5-point harness with your child, please make sure that your vehicle is euqipped with a Top Tether Anchor.

The 2008 SafeGuard Go offers these Improvements:

  • New integrated headrest with more substantial padding for comfort
  • Harness minimum weight is now just 22lbs - allowing for longer use
  • Crotch strap now has three positions (instead of just one) for better adjustability
    • Stair-stepped adjustment lengthens the strap as your child grows

BENEFITS FOR MOM AND DAD

Booster car seats rely on a vehicle's seat belt restraints to protect a child in the event of an accident. The SafeGuard Go is the first "hybrid" booster car seat, combining the easy portability of a backless booster with a unique 5-point harness, LATCH installation, and a padded headrest. The result is a safe and comfortable car seat for kid up to 100 lbs. that exceeds all government crash-test safety standards and is extremely easy to install and transport.

Installation

The SafeGuard Go installs in two ways: as a backless booster seat for use with the seat belt, or as a 5-point harness seat and headrest with LATCH. In order to use the SafeGuard Go's backrest and 5-point harness, your vehicle must have a top tether anchor. The top-tether of the Go secures the soft back, headrest, and harness. [See our diagram in the 'Features' tab below for more details.]

1) For use as a harnessed seat; for children at least 1 year and from 22 – 60 lbs

  • Lap/Shoulder Belt + Top Tether
  • Lap Belt + Top Tether
  • Lower Anchors + Top Tether (LATCH)

2) For use as a booster; for children from 40 – 100 lbs

  • Lower Anchors
  • No installation – simply position and secure child with Lap and Shoulder Belt

Important Installation Information: As a 5-point harness booster, the SafeGuard Go requires the use of the Top Tether for installation - either in combination with vehicle seat belts, or Lower Anchors. As a belt-positioning booster, the SafeGuard Go uses your vehicle's seat belts.  If you intend to use the 5-point harness with your child, please make sure that your vehicle is euqipped with a Top Tether Anchor.

A Note on Installing the SafeGuard Go:
*Your vehicle's manual may state a set weight limit for its LATCH anchors (40 or 48 lbs.).

*All vehicle manufacturer's anchor points must comply with the NHTSA's requirements.  Those requirements are standard and apply to all vehicle manufacturers.

*SafeGuard's testing shows the Go with a 60 lb. occupant is in compliance with the amount of force exerted on the anchor point requirements as outlined by NHTSA.  The increased weight of the occupant is offset by the decreased weight of the seat.

*SafeGuard urges parents to consider both their recommendations (60 lbs.) and those from the vehicle manufacturer when making your installation decision.

Convenience

The SafeGuard Go is perhaps the most convenient car seat in its class. The removable headrest / harness system folds down, allowing the entire Go booster to fit easily inside the included carrying bag. This booster is not only safe, it is ideal for travel.

BENEFITS FOR JACK OR JILL

No other harness-equipped booster seat currently on the market offers as high a weight capacity as the Safeguard Go, and the safety benefits it provides for your child are beyond compare. While certain combination boosters (also known as a "combination" car seat) do have harnesses, none can match the Safeguard Go's 60 lbs. harness weight capacity. The padded seat and armrests, improved headrest padding, and adjustable crotch strap create a comfortable ride for any child.

Comfort

The Safeguard Go's padded seat and armrests are always in place to provide your child with comfortable seating, with or without the padded headrest. The headrest has recently been enhanced with thicker padding to create a more comfortable ride, and the new adjustable crotch strap creates an even better fit for your child than before. For additional comfort, recline the seat and tighten the tether for proper tension and safety.

Safety

The Go and it's cousin the Safeguard Child Seat are two of the most thoroughly tested child car seats on the market.

  • NHTSA FMVSS 213 Safety Certified
  • Tested in dynamic crash scenarios that exceed government standards
  • Front, rear, and side impact crash tests

Years of testing went into SafeGuard car seats before going to market

Safeguard wishes to reassure parents that the Safeguard Go was thoroughly crash tested at the Center For Advanced Product Evaluation and will keep your child safe and secure in a 5-point harness up to 60 lbs. The Safeguard meets or exceeds all standards set forth by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

COMPARISON

SafeGuard has outdone themselves with the Go and the outstanding forward facing SafeGuard Child Seat. In the process, Safeguard has outdone the entire car seat industry, establishing a new standard for child vehicle safety systems. The Go is so unique, we really can't compare it to any other models directly. Parents looking for a high-value booster seat should also check out the innovative clek olli

Great Seat

Reviewer: Anonymous , Arlington, MA Date: June 25, 2009
I bought this for my 4 year old. He loves the seat and says it is really comfortable. He likes to sleep on long car rides and continues to do so with this seat. I have put this seat in my Toyota 4Runner and my father's Infinity and it is easy to put in both cars. The pitch of the seat seems fine for my son's comfort and sleeping. I am buying a second one now for my father's car.

very solid carseat

We purchased this for my 4 year old. It is true that this fits much better than a plastic framed carseat and does install faster. I do question the safety aspect of it lacking a shell, but since she is so much more securely fastened to the car, it must offset that. My one complaint is that her head is not supported at all when she sleeps - it completely flops forward. We have reclined the car's seat a bit but that didn't help. Overall very happy - will order a 2nd seat just so we can travel easily with both kids.

Only for travel

The seat has no shell, so I am not convinced it's as safe as other seats for everyday use. We bought this seat to use when we go to Grandma's and need to put it in an extra car. Note that not all our relatives have new enough cars with tether to even use the seat, though. Installation is somewhat easy, but of course there are tons of very strict DO and DO NOT rules that you must learn about the seat. It will take some time to read the manual and learn it. Only then might you be able to install it, with practice, in one minute. I like how the harness adjusts simply to any size child, so there is no need to rethread straps. As a backup I like this seat because I feel much better about my 3-year-old using this, with a 5 pt. harness, than any booster on the market. We won't use it in booster mode since we bought it for the harness. Glad to have it, but again not for everyday use for us. I went with the Radian XT for that.

I recently bought one for my 4 year old and I love it! I wish I had bought this one instead of the Britax Regent. It's comfortable and it's sturdy. I highly recommend it!

Couldn't be happier!

I did a lot of research before deciding on the Safeguard Go hybrid booster. I was conercned about it not having a plastic shell like other seats. But this booster is perfect to use as a second seat (which is what we bought it for-we have Britax Regents for their primary seat), or for carpooling. It was a breeze to install, got a very tight fit right away. This seat fits my two year old and four year old very nicely since it's fully adjustable, and it's easy to get a secure fit with the harness. We only bought one seat to see if it would work out, I will be ordering another one this week! Both kids said the seat was very comfortable and the 4yr old has a lot of room to grow! We are very happy with this purchase, and EliteCarSeats was very easy to deal with.

Great seat for toddlers

We have 3 of these seats for our 4, 3 and 1 year old. They fold up so are easy to travel with. Love the 5 point harness but you must have a rear harness point for the back of the seat to hook to. Kids seem comfortable - I plan to buy more for our other car. Highly recommend this seat.

installed 2 in 12 minutes

Reviewer: Debbie - twin's mom , Houston, TX Date: April 10, 2009
When pregnant with twins, I sat on the driveway and cried because their Eddie Bauer convertible car seats were SO hard to assemble and install. Wish I had known about Safeguard's Hybrid car seats. After buying a smaller car, I bought the Safeguards and had them out of the box and installed in 12 minutes. That was a fabulous experience. I can't belive how snug they fit (makes me realize how loose the Eddie Bauer's have been for the past 2 years!) These are amazing car seats and I plan to show them off to everyone I know!!!! Thank You!!!!

A great second car seat

Reviewer: Nita , Berkeley, CA Date: April 03, 2009
We purchased two of these seats a year ago and MY HUSBAND AND I are very happy with them. Very easy to install, Very easy to use. My DAUGHTER (who is now 3) however seems prefers a more substantial carseat. We went from a Britax roundabout to this seat and my daughter who was two at the time had no complaints and liked her big girl seat. However we noticed that she had difficultly on a long (6 hour) car trip and much preferred being in her roundabout (which we hadn't taken out yet) probably because of the incline. Later when we had a Radian placed in our car for a friend she preferred that because it had "more cushioning" and was "more comfy". She consistently wanted to be in that seat instead. We now use these seats for my parent's car (easy to store, install and take out and use for ALL the grandkids given the wide weight age and weight range) and as a second car seat for my daughter's friends. Our daughter uses a Radian as her primary seat.
