Our Review of the SafeGuard Child Seat

The first impression we got when we lifted a SafeGuard Child Seat off the rack to check it out was, "Geez, this thing is heavy." Then we pulled it out of the box, and the overall reaction was pure awe. We've seen and tested every carseat out there: from the lightest, most inexpensive Graco to high end Recaro and Britax seats, and the simple fact is that none of these brands have an advantage over SafeGuard - a company that has been testing and supplying car seat components to other companies for years.

The SafeGuard Child Seat is equipped with amazing innovations that will undoubtedly have a cascade effect on the entire car seat industry, forcing the competition to take a step back and re-evaluate the way they design, build, and test their own products. Anyone as familiar with car seats as we are at EliteCarSeats.com can instantly recognize the intense amount of thought and testing that went into the SafeGuard. It is big, heavy, and without an equal in terms of safety, convenience, and ease of installation. In the words of Kelly, our on-staff Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician, "This is the easiest seat I have ever installed in my life."

What makes the SafeGuard Child Seat so easy to install?

The standing statistic is that 85% of all car seats are improperly installed. The SafeGuard makes improper installation next to impossible. The LATCH attachment mechanism used on the SafeGuard is, hands down, the best there is. Two buttons on the seat base release the ratcheting LATCH tether. The installation process is ultra-simple:

1. Push the button to release on of the lower latch tethers
2. Pull the tether to get as much slack as you need
3. Lock both tethers in place to their LATCH anchors
4. Apply a bit of pressure to the seat, and
5. Presto! You have a perfectly installed car seat that will not wiggle or give.

The ratcheting tethers do all the work for you. No yanking, no driving your knee into the seat while tugging on the straps to get the right tension; the SafeGuard gives you perfect LATCH installation in less than 60 seconds! If your car is not equipped with LATCH anchors there are heavy duty, permanently mounted aluminum shoulder belt locks in place for perfect placement of the shoulder belt.

What is makes the SafeGuard Child Seat's frame so great?

The forward facing SafeGuard Child car seat is built on an aircraft aluminum frame with a plastic casing. The frame accounts for the unusual heaviness of the seat, and provides a level of quality construction that is impossible to match. Safety should be your #1 priority when selecting a car seat, and considering that your safety seat should be a permanent fixture in your vehicle the excess bulk of the SafeGuard should be of minimal concern. It is usable with kids from 22 to 65lbs, and has a one handed adjustment for the headrest and harness straps that will accommodate kids up to 57" tall.

The harness adjustment setting of the SafeGuard is simply brilliant, allowing for perfect tension adjustment each and every time your child gets into the seat. Lift the bright yellow lever at the base of the seat and turn the knob on either side to get the perfect amount of tension in the harness; lift the knob again when your child is getting out, making their exit a bit quicker. No tugging of straps, no over or under tension. With this adjustment mechanism you get the perfect amount of tension on the harness every time your kid gets in for a ride. It's so cool.

SafeGuard didn't stop short at easy installation . . . they brought all the comfort imaginable into the SafeGuard Child Seat as well. The plush fabric is extremely soft and the seat very thickly padded. The SmartCore foam used in the seat lining and side wings resists heat and cold, and EPP foam on the adjustable headrest provides both side-impact protection and a great place for your child to rest their sleepy head.

Bottom Line: The SafeGuard Child Seat is a singular construction of comfort and safety: built over one of the best frames imaginable, padded with only the best materials, and attaches with the most innovative and "idiot proof" mechanics ever conceived. The major drawback of the SafeGuard is its weight and bulkiness; this seat is not easy to lug around, but it installs so perfectly you may not care. With a very steep price tag, the SafeGuard is the top shelf choice in car seats. If you will accept nothing less than the absolute best for your child, you're looking right at it.

The SafeGuard Child Seat is, without a doubt, the best forward facing car seat available today.

Safeguard Car Seat

Excellent seat. Very easy to install. It's expensive, but definitely worth the $$. I'd rather skimp on on some other gear (i.e. stroller, bouncy seat, high chair) and spend the money on a safe car seat that is used just about EVERY day of the year!!

Well Designed, Well Worth It

Let me preface this by saying I am a child passenger safety tech (CPST), as well as a mom of six children. I've run the gamut on car seats, and am always intrigued when a new one comes out. I hesitated initially on this one because of the price tag. I needed a new seat for my daughter. Although only 40 lbs, she had grown too tall for the Marathon. The Regent wouldn't fit in our car, so the Safeguard it was. Whether installed by belt or by LATCH, this seat is a breeze to install. I appreciate the automatically adjusting LATCH - no fussing with a mechanism, simply push on the seat to get a fit on the seat that allows no more than one inch of movement in any direction. The built in locking clip to use to lock in a lap and shoulder belt is very sturdy and easy to use. I also appreciate the tether, and how it stores when not in use. I have two children in these seats: a 4.5 yo, and a 2.5 yo (he just hit the weight limit for rear facing on his Marathon at the time of purchase, and had to be turned around). The seats are well padded, and under the cover reveals safety foam and padding. The cover itself is soft. All three of these things together makes for a comfortable, safe seat for the child that exceeds the current safety guidelines and requirements. Adjusting a harness has never been easier. The mechanism for adjusting the harness is simple, and adjusting the seat so that the harness straps are right at the shoulders or just above the shoulders for a different child is a snap. Adjusting the harness so it is snug against the body is easy-peasy - simply turn the knob. This brings me to the one and only thing I do not like about the car seat - the continuous loop harness. It seems in a seat of this caliber we shouldn't need to worry about the straps being even and manually adjusting accordingly - it's not hard to even out the harness, and it's something I will gladly deal with in trade for all of the other wonderful safety and convenience features this seat has. In all of the seats I have dealt with in almost seven years of being a CPST, I have never come across a seat that combines ease of use with comfort and safety as well as the Safeguard. The accompanying instructional DVD is well thought out, and if watched before attempting an install, the user should have no problems getting the proper installation. One sentence conclusion? The price tag is well worth it.

Safeguard child seat.

This seat is amazing! I have a very tall 2.5 year old at 39" tall already. He is especially long in the torso so was quickly outgrowing his Britax seat. This seat is SO easy to install and get a good fit. Previously I always had to have my husband install the car seat to get a tight fit. With the self-ratcheting latch mechanism, I got the snuggest fit I have ever felt. This seat is comfortable and easy to use. I love the self adjusting harness straps that adjust simply by raising the seat back. I would HIGHLY recommend this seat to anybody looking for a forward facing car seat.

SafeGuard Child Seat

Reviewer: Jennifer , Santa Rosa, CA Date: February 12, 2008
I LOVE this car seat and so does my 2 year old son. After hours of research I decided on this one - mainly because it had side impact protection but not like the big wings like on the Recaro or Britex Boulevard. I had the Boulevard and my Son hated it because it blocked his view out the window. I also like that I can keep him in a 5 point harness up to 65 pounds. It was easy to install. It is very well padded and comfortable! Many reviews said the straps twist easy but in my experience they don't twist anymore then his old Britex. I would highly recommend this seat to anyone.

Not too big for my Lexus RX350

5
Reviewer: Brenda , San Antonio, TX Date: January 06, 2008
I am very pleased with this car seat! I drive a Lexus RX350 and wasn't sure if it would fit in my car based on another customers comment that it was too big for her car. I took a chance and ordered it (with the return insurance) because after doing research I decided this was the car seat for my 4 yr old. It fit just fine in my car. I installed it behind the drivers seat because I have another car seat on the passenger side. I do think it would cause a blind spot in the middle and/or possibly on the passenger side because it is a big seat. However, it works great for me. The seat is VERY sturdy, doesn't budge and it was very easy to install. My daughter likes it and is very comfortable. No complaints from me!

Worth it.

After months of research (and indecisiveness) I bought two Safeguard seats for my twin 3 y/o boys. I wasn't sure that they would be worth the extra money, but on our first road trip was sold! My boys have NEVER fallen asleep in the car, but dozed off quickly. Things to note for those who are sitting on the fence: they are VERY large seats, so make sure you have enough room. The seatbelts do get twisted. The buckle that is between the boys' legs regularly gets tucked underneath them and is difficult to get out. On the positive side, these seats feel softer than any living room furniture I've had! They are easy to install, adjust, and clean. Most importantly, they are safe. I would make the purchase again and, in fact, am considering the boosters for our smaller second vehicle.

Excellent seat but not for tall kids

Reviewer: Anonymous , Denver, CO Date: January 02, 2008
I just got this seat for my son who will turn 5 in 2 months. This is an excellent seat and I'm absolutely heartbroken that I'm probably going to have to return it. My son is tall (almost 44" - 75% but only 41#) and it seems the majority of his height is from his hips to his head! I put a small phone book under him to see how much room he has until the straps are below his shoulders - and it's only another 1- 1/4"! If he keeps following the 75% height chart, he'll outgrow this seat in less than 7-8 months! It's probably insane from a financial standpoint, but believe it or not, I'm actually trying to justify keeping it anyway because it is so well made/comfortable! I'm hoping that his legs will finally "sprout" more and this seat will actually last longer. Even though I'm not as fond of the Britax Regent, it definitely gives him more room to grow. He easily has at least another 3" until he's too tall for those straps. I'm thinking that it's probably because the Regent appears to have a bit more of a recline to it's back, and it also let's him sit lower (as opposed to the higher base of the SafeGuard. That said, I really don't understand why though because technically the distance between the seat and the top slots on both brands is almost identical. Maybe the SafeGuard cushion just needs to compact? Has anyone else had this experience and/or can anyone offer up some hope that the distance between his hips and head will stay the same for longer than 7 months!!??

The best

Reviewer: Anonymous , Wichita, KS Date: December 30, 2007
After searching, trying out, debating and finally purchasing the safegaurd carseat we have been extremely pleased. Our 6 year old daughter had outgrown her seat (especially when wearing outer wear or long dresses) and we knew we needed a new seat. We reviewed and compared the Britax regent, Recaro signo and como, and the radian all of which had redeeming factors. The selling point for us on the safeguard was the fact that it had a 3 place automatically adjusting crotch strap. Our daughter is petite and not very tall for her age so all of the seats would be great for those, but she is extremely long wasted and the crotch strap would ride her in uncomfortable places. This was especially important as our family wears dresses almost daily and the extra material made the problem worse. Having said all that we have been very pleased with the carseat. It is comfy, has plenty of space to grow both height and width wise, and looks great too. We like the fact that it is so easy to loosen and tighten (with just a grip lever and then some knobs for extra tightness). Our daughter is able to almost loosen and tighten it herself, which will be a boon in later years as the family expands. The absolutely only down side I see is that there isn't a cup holder, and that the knobs to tighten can sometimes be a LITTLE hard to turn. Hopefully down the road they will change both of these, but even if they don't I will purchase this seat again for my son when he outgrows his carseat. I would highly recommend the seat. Oh, and as to those reviews that the lever won't tighten the carseat sometimes--we have found that that is only the case when it hasn't been installed correctly(as in moving from a vehicle and not paying attention.) By the way the installation is a dream--fast, easy, a built in locking mechanism so need for a locking clip and if you still need help a video. This is one purchase we have no buyers remorse about and love. Try it you will love it!

It is so easy

Reviewer: Anonymous , Olympia, WA Date: December 22, 2007
I ordered this seat almost a year ago from EliteCarSeats.com to take the place of a Britax convertible seat for our 4 year old. The first thing I noticed is that it is huge. The size is similar to the Regent and I debated to pay less and get the Regent. I like the fact with this seat that I do not have to feed any shoulder straps as they get taller. I simply twist a nob and it does it for me. The installation is so easy and worth the price. This chair does not move and I shake it hard to make sure it is installed correctly. I use the LATCH system and tether it in our minivan. The only thing I have noticed about it (that I don't like) is that the straps get twisted relatively easily. I got the black seat and it is very sharp looking and I never have noticed the lint until another review pointed it out. Not an issue. Overall a great seat and would buy again. I have ordered Radian 80s for my husband's truck and for travel for our two youngest children. This one is way to heavy to tote through an airport.
