Our Review of the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30 infant car seat

The Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30 is the latest, most stylish and luxuriously padded infant car seat yet from the children's comfort and safety experts at Peg Perego. Designed in Italy for children up to 30 lbs and/or 30" tall, the Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30 is an eye-catching infant seat that enhances your child's safety by allowing him or her to remain in a rear-facing car seat for the first year or longer.

In addition, for this new 30/30 version of the Primo Viaggio SIP, Peg Perego redesigned the side impact system to be larger and more accommodating for bigger kids, and strengthened the frame and base components for an even more durable infant car seat.

BENEFITS for MOM & DAD

This stylish and safe new infant car seat from Peg Perego provides your baby with a super-safe place to rest and ride while he or she grows to 30 lbs and/or 30" tall. Not only is it safe (and attractive), it's easy to install with or without the base, using either LATCH connectors or a vehicle's safety belts.

For convenience and mobility in and out of your automobile, the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30 is compatible with all Peg Perego strollers.

Installation

Like most infant car seats, the Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30 is a two-part car seat, including both a click-in carrier and base that installs in a vehicle with either LATCH or seatbelts. The base is fitted with a handy level indicator to assure you have the proper angle of installation. The carrier unlatches from base with one hand, and locks back in with a single push and an audible click. The carrier may be installed in any vehicle without the base by following the handy belt-guides.

A simple adjustment knob eases you in attaining the perfect angle of installation. Extra bases for the Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30 are available for quicker transitions from one family vehicle to the other.

Convenience

The Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30's click-in base system makes for quick ins and outs, allowing you to detach the convenient and ergonomically designed carrier from the base or stroller seat with just one hand. The carrier itself provides the simplest & safest means of transporting an infant - carried by hand or clicked into a compatible stroller. The different adjustable components of the Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30, such as the one-handed height adjustment for the 5-point harness, are clearly labeled and easy to operate.

The enhanced weight limit of this 30/30 infant seat means that you can take advantage of these benefits for longer than you could most infant car seats, which typically only work to 22 lbs.

BENEFITS for JACK or JILL

The #1 benefit for children riding in the new Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30 is the safety of riding in a rear-facing infant seat "rear to a year" or up to 30 lbs. It's comfortable too, lined with deluxe padding and soft microfiber fabrics that breathe well and clean up easily. Even the 5-point harness and enhanced side impact protection are padded for additional comfort, and adjust to accommodate your child's growth.

Comfort

The Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30 comes with a soft, removable plush pad for infants. This insert helps even the smallest babies remain securely harnessed and comfortable. There is also extensive padding beneath the insert, on both the seat and along the harness straps.  The entire seat is wrapped in soft, stain resistant Comfort-Dry microfiber fabric that breathes well and cleans up easily. In addition, the Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30 is fitted with a large sun canopy for shade.

Safety

  • Meets or exceeds all NHTSA standards
  • 5-point safety harness
  • LATCH & Seat belt installation
  • Enhanced seat frame for better strength and durability
  • Exceeds most stringent side impact safety tests
  • Certified for use in automobiles and aircraft

COMPARISON

Car seat safety experts recommend that children ride in a rear facing car seat for as long as possible. Yet there remains only a select number of infant car seats capable of securing a child past 22 lbs.

Besides the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30, the Chicco KeyFit 30 will keep your child in an infant seat until 30 lbs. With a 32 lb weight limit, the Graco Snugride 32 promises to hold 97% of 1 year olds.

Heavy & Sweaty

Reviewer: Lyndsey , Edmonton, AB Date: June 12, 2009
I have been using this seat for almost 3 months and am now shopping for a new one. This seat is WAY to heavy and bulky! My son is only 13lbs, I can't imagine trying to carry him in it when he is at or around 30lbs! My other complaint is how much he sweats in it. He is soaked after 10 minutes... To the point he seems to dislike car rides because he's so uncomfortable. On the plus side, this car seat is very attractive, I have had numerous compliments. = 1 star Safety = 2 stars

Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP infant Seat - Great!

Reviewer: Anonymous , Boise, ID Date: August 25, 2008
We loved ours. Easy to strap the baby in and worked well with bases we had in each car. I didn't notice the weight, but I am male. We also purchased the Peg Perego Pliko 3 which was a life saver. I could take the baby out of the car and drop it into the stroller without having to wake them up and get my grocery shopping done. It was a sad day when baby outgrew the infant carrier.

elegant!

The limited edition 'Paloma' cars seat was very impressive. It does appear substantially larger than the regular Primo Viaggio (which I previously owned and LOVED), however it really was no different for me to carry around and transport. I loved the ivory leather accents rather than the fabric. I was also very impressed with the additional side impact support offered. I will definitely need a snuzzler until my newborn grows a little, but it is worth it because my babies are very large and chubby...the smaller version of the car seat was too cramped and caused them to sweat. This one has a very light support around the baby that breathes much more than the older models did. Great seat! Worth the extra $.

The perfect infant seat!

I purchased this seat for our second child, replacing an out-of-date Graco Snugride. I could not be more pleased with this product. It combines the best advances in safety with a stylish design. My newborn sleeps the whole time she is in it. The latch base is very easy to install, with push-button release latch connectors similar to Britax, and has an adjustable "foot" attachemnt for leveling, so no more rolled towels or pool noodles are necessary. I also like that the leveler is built into the base instead of the seat, so you know the seat will be positioned right on the first try. The five position strap height adjuster means that it fits her just right even as a newborn. Another major factor in my decision to buy this seat was the side impact protection, a feature I have not seen on other seats. The carrier snaps in and out of the base easily. I am very happy and would definitely purchase this product again.

Okay, but maybe look elsewhere

First of all, it would get 5 stars for the saftey rating. Great saftey features! However, my biggest issue was how straight up it sat when installed in the base. My son's head would always fall down or to one side. When installed in the stroller, you can choose to have it sitting upright or in more of a reclined position, which is nice. I went through MANY head supports trying to find one that would support his head. The only one that would work was the pads that went over the straps themselves. There is no room for pads that go completely around the head due to the side impact pads. The system is heavy, especially if you have a "big boy" like I do (18.5 lbs at 3.5 months) The carrier is not as easy to carry as the handles that are curved. I have to carry this seat in front of me in the crease of my elbow, and I am 5'6". My mom (5' ) cannot hardly carry at all. The bases are nice, pricy but worth it! Just pop out of one vehicle into the other. The travel system is great. Overall, I would buy again, but hopefully they will make some adjustments, such as a little more of a recline feature.

Bulky and heavy

Reviewer: Anonymous , Dallas, TX Date: February 01, 2008
PROS: This is a safe, attractive and easy-to use car seat. Only Graco and Chicco had comparable safety ratings (based on the flawed, but more rigourous, 2007 Consumer Reports testing), but it's way more stylish than any Graco car seat. It's easy to install, and the height of the shoulder straps is easy to adjust. CONS: It's heavy, bulky, too wide to fit into an overturned wooden restaurant high chair, has a tiny sun shade, and is more expensive than Graco or Chicco. It's a tight squeeze through the backseat doorway of most cars when the handle is in the carry position. Also, the seat in front of it must be adjusted pretty far forward for it to fit. (We know because we took it with us car shopping.) Overall, I'd recommend this car seat if you have a big checkbook, big muscles, a big car and a need for style. Otherwise, I'd go with Chicco (especially since they now have a keyfit 30 that goes up to 30 lbs.) or Graco (now that they've introduced some less objectionable fabric patterns).

Excellent

I've been using the Primo Viaggio SIP seat for 10 months now, and my daughter loves it! She falls asleep easily, likes sitting in it when we are in the car or in her stroller. I feel she is very safe in it, and it attaches very easily to the Pliko P3 stroller. I've used it on the airplane and it fits very well, easy to install and great to be able to use it without the base. I would buy another one without a doubt.

Excellent & Durable

Reviewer: Katherine , Severn, MD Date: November 16, 2007
This car seat is now on our 3rd child and we couldn't be happier. Yes, it is heavy, but it is also extremly sturdy and others have commented that they can't believe that it's already been through 2 other children. Even the fabric has held up extremely well. The kids have all been happy in the seat, which makes a happy Mom & Dad. I don't mind the weight of the seat, as I enjoy getting the mild "workout" especially when having to take off the baby weight. We recommend it to anyone...it's well worth the money!

The Best

Reviewer: Anonymous , Amherst, New York Date: August 10, 2007
We love this car seat! My husband and I did extensive research when our little girl was "en route" and decided to purchase this seat along with the Venezia stroller. We couldn't be happier with the travel system. When the seat is attached in the car via the LATCH system it is firmly secure. The adjustable side impact protection is great as it grows with your munchkin and provides extra support. The seat snaps in and out of the car easily and is so convenient when used with a stroller that allows the seat to snap in it, as well (such as the Venezia). Moreover, it is easy to take the car seat apart to clean. We had a mishap where pancake batter (don't ask) spilled all over the seat while at a friend's house and we were able to disassemble the seat, wash it and reassemble it within a two hour time frame. Not only did the car seat come out looking as good as new, but we were able to disassemble and reassemble without any instructions - that's my kind of product! We drove over 4000 miles this summer and wouldn't have wanted our little girl in anything else. It is definitely worth the extra money.
