Our Review of the Kolcraft Universal Car Seat Carrier stroller

We've been on the look out for a good universal car seat carrier for quite some time. A lot of people like to transport their kids in their infant seats, and for some the new "travel system" (stroller/car seat combination) is simply too bulky and annoying to transport. The Universal Car Seat Carrier by Kolcraft is a simple and affordable alternative. It can also buy you some time if you are still shopping around for a stroller. Basically, the Carrier is a lightweight stroller frame, which accommodates most infant seats. The Universal Carrier has a large basket for storage, swiveling wheels (great for malls and other crowded locales), and cup holders for your convenience. The folding mechanism only takes one hand - which is nice when you've got an infant seat in your other. Please note: Only transport infants that are within the size and weight limitations of your Infant Car Seat, as described in the instruction manual provided by the Infant Car Seat manufacturer.

We carry two compatible infant seats on EliteCarSeats.com:

  • Graco SnugRide Infant Car Seat
  • Eddie Bauer Infant Car Seat

*Does NOT work with the Britax Companion or the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio

You can also use the Unversal with all of the following Car seats as well:

    The BEST!

Each time my children have outgrown the infant carrier, I become very upset. Not because they grow so quickly, but, because I can't use my Universal Car Seat Carrier anymore. I love how easy this stroller is. The storage basket is huge! It's very smooth to push and the seat buckles in very easily. The one hand fold is a dream come true. If only all strollers were this way. . . Great site, very informative and I got my stroller in just two days! Thanks!

This was the best alternative to a bulky stroller. Too bad my son has now outgrown it! It was a huge help being a single mother & being bale to get in & out very quickly for safety reasons too! I really enjoyed that it was interchangle for various seats to fit on it.

    A great stroller alternative!

I decided to buy this carrier while my daughter was too small to use her stroller. Although the carseat fit into the stroller as a travel system, it was a bit too bulky and there was no way to use the basket underneath. I used this carrier with a Graco Snugride Infant Car Seat. This carrier was the perfect size and there was no problem accessing the basket underneath. And there is a lot of room in the basket also. It is compact when folded and very lightweight. My only problem with this carrier is that at times it could be difficult to fold. There is NO WAY you can fold this thing with one hand like they claim.

I was despondent when I had to give up the carseat carrier when my son outgrew his Graco Snugride. I guess I liked the simplicity of it the most. It's just a very simple frame that a carseat sits on. Yes, it just sits, it didn't snap (at least mine didn't). I read about that before i bought it, and it didn't faze me...much. After we got it, i performed a little test. I strapped the car seat on, WITH baby inside (to replicate realistic conditions), but in a safe place. I leaned it this way and that and the car seat did not budge! What's more, I had to really heave it just to get it to lean; the wheel base is really nice and wide, so it's not tippy in the least. What the simple frame does give you is LOTS of storage space. I fit the diaper bag, several shopping bags, my down jacket and a couple of other small items down there. The ride is fairly nice and smooth, better than I expected for the price. The suspension has a slight spring to it, but is a lot gentler than the umbrella stroller I have. The steering is straight and smooth. Fold up is nice. I never had a problem using the one hand close (though I always had to demonstrate to people who were new to it, like my mom--I guess it's not very intuitive, but I find that's the case with most strollers). And I liked how I could just stand it up on its end while it was inside the house. I guess I was so attached to this stroller because it saved my sons naps. Starting around four or five months he was so hard to put down for a nap, especially in the afternoon! Finally I hit on taking him for a stroll in the afternoons and it was like magic. Instant sleep every time. We used to go for long walks, forty minutes or more and it never got uncomfortable. The padded handle is very comfy. I used the little tray for my water bottle (had to lie it down flat or it would bounce out) or my phone or whatever. The million-dollar moment was always seeing his face (and him seeing mine) when he woke up. There was never the crankiness or upset that often accompanies waking up from a nap. Just a big calm smile. Since we stopped using this stroller i have shopped around for other strollers that allow the walker to face the strollee and all the ones I have found are BIG bucks (high three hundreds for Perego Venezia and $800 (hello?) for Bugaboo Frog). Now that I'm stroller shopping again, I don't know. I had considered buying a travel system way back when, but didn't because I read that they wear down fast and are bulky. I sometimes wonder if I shouldn't have just gone with the travel system. (I came close to buying the Graco Quattro.) It somehow bothers me that less than one year after buying two strollers, I have to go out again and research and buy another one. In the final analysis, I think I'm going to buy a more expensive stroller now and use it along with my umbrella stroller. I will lose a little in the saving money competition, but I would like to think that i came out ahead in the quality department.

Perfect for Quick Trips with Baby

    5
Reviewer: NJshopper , Duluth, MN Date: October 31, 2005
This is a great invention. The price makes it even more attractive. As strollers get bigger and bigger, most of us want a smaller, simpler option for quick trips (picking up kids at school, dashing into the store, etc) while baby is still in a rear-facing infant seat. This is a must have for those of us on the go. The Kolcraft makes it easy to pop the car seat out of the car and onto the base. It has a very large and accessible storage basket for your diaper bag or other items (the basket is better than the basket on most full-size strollers). In my opinion you should still have a regular stroller for longer outings and walks. I am not a fan of leaving baby in the car seat any longer than necessary. I use our full-size stroller for walks and family outings. The only drawback to the Universal is that some car seats (like Graco) don't lock onto the base. The newest model of this item addresses this issue by using a thin, metal bar in the back that the car seat securely sits on. If you are buying this item, make sure you find the latest model with the metal bar. The older models (I bought mine in Jan '04) have a plastic bar in the back that is not as good.

    Great! Never wake baby again!

My husband and I decided to buy this after reviewing several strollers in The Baby Bargains book. We bought ours from WalMart for 39.99. It is great! We love this! We don't have to move our sleeping baby our of the carseat when we go somewhere (such as the mall!) The only thing I didn't like is it is a pain to try to find. You pretty much have to order it.

Sadly my baby has outgrown the infant carrier so we can't use this anymore, but this stroller was THE BEST! I had two 'regular' strollers as well, but this was the one we used. Easy to use, huge basket, great cupholders, easy to fold, LIGHTWEIGHT, maneuverable. Whenever we were out, I was asked by other parents where I got it, and they all had the same complaints about their travel systems - heavy & bulky and hard to get to the basket, etc. I've told everyone I can about this stroller and how great it is. Buying some for shower gifts.

    Simply the best

After receiving our Peg Perego & using that a few times and then receiving this a few weeks after our little boy was born, I am convinced this is simply the best stroller around! So easy to manuever, I can put it together in one hand in one step and throw the car seat carrier in there in a flash. The basket is great-nice and roomy and easy to get to, there are cup holders and it's so light and pretty compact. After searching and searching for the right stroller and thinking the expensive ones would be the best, I was so wrong. He may outgrow this soon not being in a carrier anymore, but it's still well worth having it for the time he is in the carrier - very well worth it and I will really miss it once he's out of the carrier!
