Our Review of the Joovy Big Caboose double stroller

The Joovy Big Caboose is a tandem double stroller with triple-passenger potential. Some might call this the 'ultimate tandem twin mobile', made specifically for families who are on the go and need room to grow. The overall design and sturdy construction of the Joovy Big Caboose emphasizes functionality and durability, utilizing a steel and aluminum frame that folds up into a nice slim package for storage or transportation.

The Big Caboose is an ideal stroller for families with young children of varying ages. If you only have two children in your care, you can also check out the Joovy Caboose. The Caboose has room for two: one in a harness seat (which has the same big range of compatible car seats*) and the other riding on the back.

  • The extra seat on both the Caboose and Big Caboose are padded and equipped with a 3-point harness.

The possibilities offered by the Joovy Big Caboose to parents with multiple children are extensive, giving it a value over and above tandem strollers like the Graco DuoGlider or Combi Counterpart. Those strollers only have room for two, and are only compatible with infant car seats from their respective companies. The Joovy Big Caboose is compatible with an extensive list of car seats* and has a patented Stand On 'runner' for your toddler to ride on while you push, as well as a rear facing seat at the back.

The big picture is that large or growing families will have plenty of seating options wit the Big Caboose. Possible combinations include: newborn + young toddler + older toddler; infant twins + toddler; 2 newborns; twin toddlers + older sibling; the list goes on and on.

Another really nice thing about the Joovy Big Caboose is that the rear seat is elevated, allowing the child in back to see what lies ahead. The underside storage basket is HUGE, which you will undoubtedly appreciate seeing as you've got at least two kids - maybe three.

*The two seats of the Joovy Big Caboose are compatible with the following car seats:

Bottom Line:  This is undeniably an excellent tandem stroller, due mostly to its unparalleled versatility. But, at 37lbs., the weight could pose a problem for some. When fully loaded--with two kids in the front seats and one rider in the rear, you may need a strong back to get it moving. Still, it has a very stable design and handles pretty well as long as you keep it on smooth surfaces. (Off-roading is not recommended, as small wheels make it pretty much impossible.)

For everyday use like shopping and sidewalk strolling, the tandem Big Caboose beats a triple side-by-side hands down--you can't get a Triple through a standard doorway. The wide range of compatible car seats makes the Big Caboose a solid investment, giving it considerable long-term usability and good resale or hand-me-down potential. It is more expensive than the other tandems at EliteCarSeats.com, but the higher price reflects the range of qualities and features that are exclusive to the Joovy Big Caboose.

Ir's huge, but it works for me!

Reviewer: Monique , Vancouver, BC Date: September 13, 2008
This stroller is huge, but what do you expect from a triple... I didn't find it to be all that much longer than a Graco Duoglider, and you don't have to disassemble the stroller to store or take it anywhere. It fits in the back of my 06 Grand Caravan on its side, but I have to remove the front tray and canopy. I didn't have high expectations of this stroller. It fulfills its purpose of getting my 2.5 year old and 17 month old twins around (confined;)) almost perfectly. My only serious complaint was that the wheels started squeaking on our first trip out with it. To rid myself of the squeak I had to remove the hubcaps and spray with WD40 - I would suggest doing this upon initial assembly, save yourself the hastle later on. All in all I recommend this stroller, although I still prefer my Maclaren Twin Techno, but my 2 year old can't walk all day long and the twins are getting a little big for the sling whenever big brother needs to rest or is sleeping - my reason for buying the Big Caboose in the first place right!

Definately meets our needs!

Reviewer: Jenn , Salt Lake City, UT Date: August 11, 2008
I debated a long time about this purchase and when one came up on the local craigslist, I started reading reviews heavily to decide if I was ready to drop so much money on a stroller. I got a great deal on mine, but would seriously consider paying retail if I had to because I LOVE IT!! My older son was almost 3 when we first bought this stroller and it has been a lifesaver for him. He's a runner and an explorer, so it's been so nice to have a place designated for him to be while we're out. My twins were 4 1/2 months when we bought the stroller and we had a good experience with being able to strap in their carriers. Big brother is now 4 and he still rides without any problems, although he is almost to the point where he prefers to walk. The twins are 18 months and are still doing great in it! I'm not quite ready to pass this one along, but I have a feeling that we are nearing the end of our days with it, simply because my oldest doesn't need it anymore. Here are a few of the pros and cons with this stroller: Size: It is a large stroller, but I don't find it to be any more bulky than any other double stroller, just longer. One of the reviews I read said it did not fit into their Durango, so I worried that it would not fit into our Trailblazer. When we measured, I didn't think it would work, but it did. It does take up quite a bit of the cargo space, but it fits and we still have room for most everything else. The snack trays and canopies come off very easily, which takes the length of the stroller from 63" to 55". The seats are nothing special...not terribly cushioned....but I imagine that's the case to help cut down on the bulk. Weight: Again, this is a large stroller, so it's going to be on the heavy side (I think it's around 35 pounds). It is made out of lightweight aluminum, which some reviews I read said felt cheap, but if they'd used something more heavy duty, you wouldn't be able to lift it. The way the stroller folds up, the handle rests in the middle, which helps when lifting to not make you feel off balance. I'm a pretty small gal, but I have no trouble lifting the stroller in and out of my Trailblazer. Ride: Considering the amount of weight you're pushing around, the Big Caboose is fairly easy to maneuver. I do have to put some muscle into it when I'm making turns, but hey, who doesn't need an extra workout now and then? I was surprised at how easily I was able to weave in and out of clothing racks at the mall. The ride is very smooth overall. Sit & Stand Feature: My 4 year old weighs about 34 pounds and is 39 inches tall and has plenty of room to grow in his space on the stroller. I imagine he'll quit riding more because of independent than size. It's not a super roomy space, but he is able to use the little seat even with the car seats attached. One thing that can be annoying is that when my toddler is sitting, he tends to want to drag his feet on the ground or on the wheels. Once, he bumped the wheel brake and we came to a jolting stop. I would guess that this would be an issue with any stroller of a similar design. Cons: The undercarriage basket is hard to access, especially when the carseats are in use. It has a lot of room, but it was awkward for bulkier items. There are no cup holders for mom and dad. Each seat has a mesh pocket on the back to stow small things, but I'm not sure what I'd do if I wanted to take along a drink. Joovy does offer an accessory cup holder for mom and dad, but it runs something like $25...not bad if you need it, but it is an extra expense that's frustrating when you've just paid so much for the stroller. Overall, I've been very pleased with the Big Caboose. It has more than met our needs and we've gotten plenty of use out of it! I feel much more independent with it....trips to the store used to be daunting with a toddler and twins, but I know now that I can manage them all on my own with this stroller!

I still love the idea of this stroller and it seems to be very well made. I was just very bummed because it does not fit into our new Nissan Quest minivan.

Quit complaining

Reviewer: Carrie , Los Angeles Date: February 23, 2008
Geez...what does everyone expect? It is gigantic but it serves a great purpose. I have 1 1/2 year old twins and an almost 4 year old. When we go to the zoo of for trips that require alot of walking this stroller is perfect. This probably isnt what you want for an everyday stroller because of the size but cant the complainers out there give some kudos for all of the positives about this stroller. When my twins are in there side by side stroller they are constantly taking each others snacks, drinks...etc away from each other and now they cant!!! My 4 year old likes having the freedom of being able to sit or stand when he gets tired. Ya he might have to bend a little sometimes but it sure beats not having the option. I love the swivel canopies. That is an option that is hard to find and what child likes the glaring sun in their eyes. I just have to give Joovy a thumbs up for coming out with this stroller!

JOOVY BIG CABOOSE A MUST FOR THREE CHILDREN!

Reviewer: holly , cleveland, Ohio Date: April 29, 2007
I LOVE This stoller!! We have 3 children 3 yr, 2 yr and 5 mo. This has been LIFESAVER!! I have had no problems and it fits easily into our honda odyssey. I do not use the carseat adaptor my daughters britax carseat fits snuggly in the second seat, it would have to be used if you are putting a carseat in the front seat. It is light weight and pretty easy to turn when you consider I am pushing around at least 100 pounds of children. I would buy this again in a heart beat. I LOVE IT

Joovy Big Caboose

I just received this stroller and it seems to be very well made. I took the front canopy and tray off and had no problem fitting it in the back of my Chevy Venture minivan. I have 7 children and wish this stroller was available 10 years ago. I've been through several double, triple and single strollers and this is very well made. The only improvement I would like is for the back child to be able to climb in and out herself and the trays to go on and off easier. Thank you Joovy for an excellent product!

I am in the process of trying to find yet another stroller. We, too, will have a 3, 1 1/2 and newborn in about 4 months. We have the Joovy double stroller and have been satisfied with it. However, after reading about the difficulty with the triple stroller, I will continue to look. Thank you again.

It works

We have 3 children, 9 months, 21 months, and 4 years old. This stroller is bulky and hard to push and the rear platform barely has any room for our oldest. The front 2 seats are great, and I love the 3-point harness. It is not nearly as nice as our Graco Duoglider, its made out of cheap metal. I think its going to work fine for trips to the mall and zoo, and perfect for when our 4 year old is too tired to walk anymore. I just wish it was better quality and had more room in the very back.

Big stroller

4
Reviewer: Anonymous , Rockford, Il. Date: March 03, 2007
I purchased this stroller for my new twins and their 2 1/2 year old brother. Because we live in the midwest, we have yet to use the stroller. We have put the infant seats on and they attach very easily, but I can see where the space for the thrid child is tight and he will have to bend over to seat on the seat. Also standing is a little short on room for him, but we will see how it goes on long walks. The other problem is it does not fit across the back of my Durango and so if we travel I think we will have to pull off the front wheels for a better fit. I still feel I will like this stroller because it has to be long to accomadate three children and it steers very nice. Time will tell.
