Our Review of the Graco SnugRide infant car seat

New For the 2007 Graco SnugRide:

  • EPS Foam in all Graco SnugRide infant car seats
    • EPS stands for "Expanded Polystyrene", more commonly known as Styrofoam. Used in all types of safety equipment, EPS foam has proven to be one of the most reliable and effective impact absorbing materials available.
  • An array of new fabrics, with varying features*

The Graco SnugRide with EPS infant car seat is a highly popular and top-rated infant car seat that provides first-rate transportation safety for your baby, plus convenient mobility options for you. Even with its relatively low price, the Graco SnugRide with EPS receives unmatched praise for its safety by leading consumer magazines and websites.

Equipped with a padded 5-point harness, a retractable sun canopy for shade, and a padded headrest insert to support your baby's head, the Graco SnugRide with EPS provides a very safe and comfortable place for your baby to rest and ride.

For your convenience, the ergonomic carrying handle and highly rated stay-in-car base make transporting your infant a very simple process: Just click the infant carrier into the base and properly secure your baby in the 5-point harness - your beloved passenger is as safe as can be. Once the car ride is over, simply release the carrier from the base and carry your baby anywhere without fussing or waking him or her up.

The Graco SnugRide with EPS infant car seat will serve you and your baby very well, from your first ride home from the hospital 'til the day he or she is 22 lbs. and ready to move up to a convertible seat. Like all infant car seats, the SnugRide is rear facing only. It safely supports a child up to 22 lbs., and/or 29 inches tall, and is compatible with a long list of strollers.

By transferring your SnugRide baby carrier to one of these compatible strollers, you can create your own fantastic baby travel system. This will (hopefully) make every trip with your baby to the park or mall a scream-free process, because you can get your baby out of the car, into the stroller, and back again without ever removing him or her from the carrier. And once they've outgrown the Snugride you can continue using the stroller for a few years to come.

Correcting the Correction

3
Reviewer: Vicki, mother who's used three different car seats for three different children , Winchester, VA Date: February 08, 2008
Sean from Greendale, IN you may have some of your details backward. i say "may" because it depends on whether or not *this* article, that my information comes from, is accurate. http://www.consumersearch.com/www/family/baby-car-seats/ You said that Consumer Reports reported crash results at 70 mph that were actually at 38 mph, but according to the article, it was the other way around. They reported at 38 mph an impact equivalent to 70 mph, which made for "faulty testing" since the car seats were only supposed to be tested at 38 mph, and therefore any car seat not passing shouldn't be harshly judged for the results of that test. But in my book, a 70 mph impact is possible -- esp. driving on US-VA Rte. 7 during rush hour, when irresponsible selfish women are putting on eye-liner at 70 mph and men are reading the newspaper as they drive to work. If the SnugRide and only one other car seat really were the only two that stayed in place at such harsh testing conditions, to me, that suggests a product that could potentially be superior. i'm only giving the SnugRide three stars because there are car seats out there like my last-used Evenflow Portabout V that can have the handle pushed down to the lowest position one-handed (invaluable if you have more than one little one), and i find that feature quite desirable now that i've experienced it. Addtionally, i bought a SnugRide in Jan. for a child i was expecting at the end of Feb., and i mailed the registration card as soon as i got it home. When a recall was issued for my type of SnugRide on Mar. 15, i didn't find out about it until June when i happened to be reading that month's edition of Consumer Reports in a dr's office waiting room! Thank goodness nothing happened in that time, as the recall was for car seats that would not stay in the bases in case of crash. Of course, i was using the base! And of course, i was angry! We're expecting our fourth child now, and i will likely buy a SnugRide anyway, but whatever car seat you buy, i just suggest you periodically check for recalls, in case yours gets lost in the mail, or is never mailed out. i posted this correction because i saw that many people are finding your information helpful, but it may not be accurate. Then again, the article i posted may be the inaccurate one. People who are worried just have to do their homework about it.

Safe & Secure...& Pretty

Reviewer: Heidi Lippy Sprinkle , Colora, Maryland Date: December 26, 2007
We purchased the Graco Snug Ride for our third child after having worn out a previous Graco with two prior children. I love the fit. I love the textures and cleanable surfaces. The secure feeling helps RFS feel snug while strapped into her seat. We have even used it as a last resort upright sleep spot! All of the straps are easily adjusted and the bar makes carrying easy as well. If I could change anything I would re-engineer the movement mechanism on the bar to make the release tight but easier to work. The seat also locks securely into our stroller frame (not a Graco Travel System) and the base installation was a breeze. We bought the pink version. I highly recommend this if you are looking for a girl seat without all the frilly stuff. The pink is just right and not over the top. The black trim balances it perfectly. We gave this a five star rating because we truly have no complaints only compliments! Thank you Graco for the best infant seat we have yet to use!

Reviewer: Anonymous , Belfair, WA Date: October 13, 2007
Love this seat! Our daughter was a 1 lb & 12 in. preemie-She came home at 3 mos old & 4 lbs & 15.5 inches, our other seat was huge on her-then we got this as a gift-so much better! She's now almost 2 yrs old and 19 lbs & 28 inches-low muscle tone due to cerebral palsy but this seat still fits-and her head wont fall forward-which is nice-very sturdy, easy to install- we will be sad when she outgrows this because it has worked so well for us.

Well worth the price

Reviewer: Misty , Brooklyn, WI Date: October 04, 2007
I have used this seat in Metropolitan for both of my boys (born in '04 and '06). They were 6# 2oz and 7# at birth. The double head support was great for the early days; head supports removable as child grows. The attached boot and blanket were also great for WI winters. Sunshade is great to keep the sun out of their eyes in the car and to shield wind and rain outside of the car. When used with a Quattro stroller, it's kept my child dry in an unexpected rain. The seat is easy to take apart and re-assemble with a little practice. The cover is machine washable and very durable. I wish the handle could be turned 90 degrees on top, but that's the only wish I have for this seat. A little pricey, but well worth it when you compare the cushioning to other infant seats. I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

CHOKING HAZARD

1
Reviewer: Anonymous , Whidbey Island, WA Date: September 28, 2007
This is very serious. My 7 month old started choking & gagging in the back seat. I checked on him and found a ball of polyester fill on his chest. He didn?t have any toys in his seat, nor was anything else in his reach. I was baffled. Upon inspecting the seat, I noticed stuffing hanging out of the cover. There is only a thin fabric covering the fill on the UNDERSIDE of the cover. My baby tugged at the cover where it gapes, and then clawed through quite easily with his little fingers. He pulled at the stuffing and proceeded to put it into his mouth. I am not sure why Graco used polyester fill and substandard fabric in this way. We bought our Snugride in February 2007. Model # 8643MDW3 should be recalled. Inspect your seat and check the strength of the fabrics (both sides).

Comments from The Staff:

Thank you for the review! Graco has addressed this concern and they issued a Safety Notification you can read here. All Snugrides we have in stock were manufactured after the affected dates and will not be affected.

Thank you,

We like it

Reviewer: Ruby's Dad , Santa Monica, CA Date: September 05, 2007
We bought this seat to go with our Infinity stroller. Fits well, looks great. We had another snugride and got this one just for the looks. Like most infant seats it's still big for a newborn. We bought little strap pads (pink bunnies) to keep her head from flopping around. Works fine. My only complaints are that the angle of the seat (the bucket) is a little odd it seems like she pitches forward at a funny angle sometimes and is a bit squished. There's no foam under her bottom. This is the same for all the seats that I've seen. It's just the fabric over the hard plastic shell. I don't know if this is a safety/design issue??? The other thing is that the release is a little wide spread for small hands. I don't have any problems, but my wife finds it a bit of a stretch to release the seat.

The only thing that I wish this car seat had was a tether on the base to help stabilize it.

Wonderful Baby Seat

5
Reviewer: Debra , London UK Date: August 20, 2007
I bought this car seat for my 4th son and loved it. I have the metropolitan and I think the colors where so classy. It fit perfectly in the Graco duo-glider that I used quite a bit before I bought the Phil and Teds. I never used it in the Phil and Teds but it does work. The car seat is so nicely padded and I love the extra headrests they give you so it fit him perfectly when he was just born and could easily be removed when he got bigger. I also think the weight of the car seat is good - it's almost 10 lbs lighted then the other Graco car seat - which would be incredibly heavy when the baby gets older. I had no problems with this car seat - easy to clean and seemed comfortable/secure for baby.
