Our Review of the Graco Safe Seat Step 2 toddler seat

Bailey on CLEARANCE for 166.99! Regularly priced at $189.99. Save $23 (12%)

The Graco Safe Seat (Step 2) is the second in a three-seat process that Graco has engineered for every step of your infant or toddler?s age and weight group. The forward-facing Step 2 car seat is intended for children over the age of one between 20 and 40 pounds and up to 43" inches tall.

A unique feature to the Safe Seat (Step 2) is that it is one of the only forward-facing toddler car seats that reclines while it's installed. This means it's easier to install - since you can get easy access to the belt path for correct installation. In addition, it's a lot more comfortable for kids to ride in during longer rides. (It is recommended however, that kids sit in the most upright position as much as possible when in a forward-facing car seat for safety.) The Safe Seat (Step 2) also features the belt lock-off system which secures the seatbelt for easier installation.

The Graco Safe Seat (Step 2) also has EZ Wash padding, which means you don't have to remove the harness system to clean the pad. The 5-point harness is easy to adjust from the front buckling system. There are also removable padding pieces like a body support, harness covers and head pillow. This can be really crucial for comfort as some kids prefer more padding and some feel constricted by the extra support.

The Graco Safe Seat (Step 2) also has a removable cup holder and snack tray for food or toys.

One important consideration to note is that while the Safe Seat (Step 2) does have a fairly standard maximum weight limit at 40 lbs., there are seats out there with more features and more room to grow. For example, if extra weight capacity is something you might need, the new Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe Convertible is capable of supporting kids up to 33 lbs. in the rear-facing position and up to a whopping 55 lbs. in the forward-facing mode. Of course, you will pay more for the luxury.

love it!

I purchased this seat last year when my daughter outgrew her Graco Comfort Sport. She was 2 1/2 and still needed to be in a harnessed carseat, and the Safe Seat Step 2 allowed her to continue to be harnessed. She is now going on 4 and still fits in it (with room to grow), and she is tall for her age. She loves riding in it, and the recline option is wonderful, she falls asleep in her car seat all the time and seems very comfortable. The belt lock-off is a nice feature, it makes me feel like the seat is more secure, since i don't have the latch option in my car. The only thing i was worried about was if it was going to fit in car, since it was so big, but i had no problems at all. The only downfall is that it can't be used rear facing, and also it is a very heavy seat, but no heavy enough for me to stop using it. Overall, this carseat is wonderful, and definatly worth the money!

flaw in shoulder belt

Reviewer: Anonymous , Zanesfield, OH Date: January 21, 2008
I have had this seat for about 5 months now. I really loved it because my daughter actually enjoyed getting in this seat. My wife just noticed that the right side shoulder strap was frayed at the bottom where the strap goes through the bottom of the seat. How safe is this when the strap is almost ripped through?

Great seat for the money

Reviewer: Jodi A. , Pittsburgh, PA Date: November 21, 2007
I love this seat. We previously had 2 of these for our 2-year old twins and had to replace the seats due to an accident. After a ton of research to look for a better seat, I decided to come back to these seats. IF you remove the seat pad the belts tighten perfectly. I did struggle when the pads were in, but we don't need the extra padding so I took them out. This is the #1 reason I went back to these seats, as my Alpha Omega seats are a pain to tighten. The other features that are nice are the cupholder that has a spot for a cup and another section for snacks. Also, the seat reclines while in position, so you can recline if your child falls asleep without a hassle. The seats are large, but they are installed in our Pathfinder so we have plenty of room for them.

Nice seat but could be better

The car seat broke when I was installing it. Underneath the cover is a styrofoam base that keeps the shape. When I was securing the seat in the back of my car I pushed on the seat and the styrofoam broke. The seat still functions but Not what I would have expected for the money.

Terrible expirence

Reviewer: Susan , Palm Beach, Florida Date: October 18, 2007
I own 2 of these seats and on BOTH of the seats the front casing of the main buckle came off exposing the locking mechanism. It was very easy for my son to push the now exposed button, unbuckle himself and get out of the seat while we were on the highway. When it happened to the first seat I thought it was just a random thing now that it has happend for the second time to the EXACT same seat I am convinced it is a design flaw. I called customer service at Graco and they didn't seemed concerned. I think I will be switching back to a Britax seat like I have always had for my other children. It is truly worth the extra money.

Comments from The Staff:

I am very sorry to hear about the problems you've experienced with the Safe Seat Step 2. I have notified our contact at Graco about your problem and I've been assured they are looking into the issue. I know that doesn't do much for your current situation, but I did want to mention our great No Worries Returns & Exchanges Policy for if and when you do need to return the seat.

Thank you,
Kelly

I love this car seat, it makes my son look so much more comfortable riding in the car, and it's easy to use. I think the only down fall is that it's very large.

The Winner!

We've had this seat (in Bailey) for about 3 months now and absolutely LOVE it. We looked at basically every other car seat on the market - including the Graco Comfort Sport, the Cosco/Eddie Bauer that converts to a booster, the Evenflo Triumph, and even the Britax Boulevard. I think I would have gone with the Boulevard if I could convince my husband to spend that much money, but we are all 100% pleased with the Step 2. We have made several long (from 10 to 23 hours) road trips this summer with our 1 year old and couldn't ask for a more perfect seat. We love that it reclines while installed. What an ingenious idea! We use that feature ALL THE TIME, even on quick errands when he seems to be getting tired. He has no problem sleeping in it at all; it really reclines a lot! Our son seems EXTREMELY comfortable sitting in it, and although no 1 year old really enjoys being restrained in a car seat, he is happy enough. The Pedic-foam seems to make the seat that much more comfortable. I also like the easy-removable cover and the comfort insert that comes with the Bailey. I would recommend this seat in a heartbeat! The only thing I am worried about is that it is not convertible. We are expecting baby #2 in a month, and I fear that he is going to outgrow his infant car seat more quickly than his brother, and we will be forced to purchase either a convertible car seat, or Graco's Step 1 (currently we have the SnugRide, which only accomodates up to 22 pounds). Other than that, this seat is perfect!

Graco Safe Seat

Reviewer: Linda , Rockledge, FL Date: September 13, 2007
With my four year old I often wondered why someone didn't invent a reclining toddler seat and I was so excited to find this one from Graco for my 12 month old. He loves it and I love the fact that it is so versatile and comfy. It also appears to be extremely safe - he is surrounded by protection. The only tiny complaint I have is that the straps do tend to get a little twisted when you loosen them to release the baby.

Wonderful Seat

Reviewer: Leanne , Winchester, VA Date: September 02, 2007
My son and I love the Safe Seat. He seems really comfortable in the seat and best of all his head does not fall forward!! The recline is a wonderful way to keep them comfortable. I also like the way the seat fits into the car. We have it center installed and, because of its slim base, it allows for easy access to the belt buckles on each side of it. Good if you have other children sitting beside the little one. I think the only possible drawback would be the size of the seat. It is BIG. I would check and see if it fit in your car before purchasing. We have a Yukon and I am not sure if it will fit behind the driver or passenger seats. I have not tried but it looks like it would be tight. over all...WE LOVE IT.
