Our Review of the Combi Zeus Turn
The Combi Zeus is the only convertible car seat that rotates from rear to forward facing without ever having to re-install. The Combi Zeus' "Z-Turn" feature makes buckling a child in much, much easier, as you can turn the seat to face you and then rotate and lock it into either the forward or rear facing position. There are many convertible car seats available, but the Zeus from Combi is the only car seat for infants and toddlers that does not require re-installation when switching from the rear to forward facing positions.
- Rear facing: 5 - 22 lbs
- Forward facing: 20 - 40 lbs
- Age: newborn - 4 yrs
BENEFITS FOR MOM AND DAD
The convenience offered by the Combi Zeus' Z-Turn feature is considerable, especially when placing your child in the seat and securing him or her with the seat's 5-point harness. Situating and securing a baby in the rear facing position can be difficult, sometimes requiring you to climb into the backseat and do some awkward maneuvers to get a good fit. With the Combi Zeus you can get baby in easily, then rotate the seat to appropriate position.
INSTALLATION: The base of the Combi Zeus installs with safety belts and LATCH connectors. Convertible car seats typically need to be installed twice, first in the rear facing position, then turned around and re-installed as your child grows. Not only does the Combi Zeus convertible car seat eliminate reinstallation, it simplifies every adjustment phase along the way - making it easier to adjust the harness as your child gets taller.
The Combi Zeus is equipped with belt lock-offs for safety belt installs, as well as top and lower LATCH tethers. There is a LATCH storage system in the base when the tethers are not being used.
CONVENIENCE: Beyond the convenience of the permanent installation and Z-Turn features, the Combi Zeus convertible car seat has special loops to hold the harness straps out of the way after removing your child from the seat. Then, when you need to get them back in, you won't have to fish under and around for the harness straps and buckles.
In addition, the Combi Zeus is equipped with a simple harness adjustment strap that helps you get the perfect fit for your baby boy or girl. The fabrics of the seat are removable and machine washable, and the contoured edges of the large base help protect your car's seats.
BENEFITS FOR BOYS AND GIRLS
The Combi Zeus is a convertible car seat, meaning it secures both infants and toddlers under 40 lbs. The Zeus provides a reclined seat setting in the forward and rear-facing positions, allowing kids to lean back and relax on rides both long and short. Also, the seat is well padded, as are the harness straps and buckles.
COMFORT: The Combi Zeus comes with an insert pillow for infant passengers, and a padded harness to provide comfort for kids of any appropriate age. The seat is thickly padded, and the ventilated fabric cover prevents overheating and sweaty bottoms. The Combi Zeus' recline setting in the forward facing position may be the best comfort feature, as a stable recline allows growing kids to kick back and sleep without kinked necks or complaints.
SAFETY: The Zeus car seat from Combi has abundant safety features, from the anti-rebound base with LATCH, and a full EPS lined seat with deep side wings for enhanced side impact protection. The anti-rebound base is an excellent means of preventing potentially harmful rebound when the seat is used with an infant in the rear-facing position.
The Combi Zeus also includes a red/green indicator on the buckle to ensure that the harness is properly secured before hitting the road with your baby.
Safety Note: Best practice with convertible car seats is to keep your child rear facing until he or she is 1 year and 20 lbs - but the longer you keep them rear facing, the better. So why didn't Combi approve the rear facing weight limit higher than 22 lbs? If you are considering the Zeus, keep in mind that most other convertible car seats on the market have a higher approved rear-facing limit than 22 lbs.
COMPARISON
The Z-turn feature is unique and innovative, similar in functionality to the Orbit Baby Infant System – however, the Orbit Baby infant car seat cannot be used forward facing to 40 lbs. The Combi Zeus is a safe and convenient convertible car seat, but a higher harness weight capacity would make it even better. For as big a seat as it is (and it is a Big Car Seat) the 40 lbs max and 22 lbs rear-facing limit do create limitations.
If you're looking for another convertible that incorporates some of the same safety features, check out the Britax Diplomat or Maxi-Cosi Priori. Nothing will come close to having the convenience features of the Zeus but you will be able to keep your child in a safe 5-point harness longer with the Britax Boulevard or Sunshine Kids Radian 80.
