Our Review of the Britax Frontier toddler car seat

The Britax Frontier Toddler Car Seat allows parents to keep their children secure in a 5-point harness for as long as possible. Suitable for kids at least 25 lbs, 2 years of age, and 30" tall, the Frontier from Britax is best for parents graduating their little ones from a convertible car seat. Why such a high starting weight and age? Britax's commitment to best safety practices encourages parents to keep babies rear-facing as long as possible; to lower the limits would accomplish the opposite goal. Once junior grows out of the harness, the Frontier converts to a belt-positioning booster suitable for kids up to 100 lbs.

BENEFITS FOR MOM & DAD

While still a larger seat, the Britax Frontier is not as big as the popular Britax Regent. The smaller size delivers the added benefits of an 80 lb harness, plus a booster up to 100 lbs, while allowing a better car fit than the larger Regent. Convenient features such as the no-thread harness adjuster help keep frustrations to a minimum.

Installation: The Britax Frontier installs two ways: as a forward-facing 5-point harness seat and as a belt-positioning booster. Push button LATCH connectors let you install the car seat quickly, simply, and tightly. LATCH may be used for installation as a booster at any weight range. Color coded belt guides ensure proper positioning of the seat belts when used as belt-positioning booster.

With the release of the Frontier, some owners report issues with installation. Parents are encouraged to read the instruction manual. Tips and tricks to keep in mind:

  1. Position the 'recline block' before installation based on whether you will use the seat with the harness or as a belt-positioning booster.
  2. To alleviate difficulty with installation, Britax includes supplementary instructions with information on a short belt path and long belt path method.
  3. Always use Tether with installation for children weighing 65 - 80 lbs.

Convenience: The high harness weight limit (80 lbs) is the defining benefit of the Frontier, allowing you to keep junior as safe as possible. Get kids in and out of the seat with ease thanks to the lifting armrests. Readjust the harness and head rest height with little effort. Fitting children up to 80 lbs, the Frontier keeps junior protected, longer. Plus, the built in booster seat means this seat is very likely the last your child will need.  Although incorporating a higher weight capacity harness and high back booster in one seat is a great bang for your buck, the high minimums mean that you can't go straight from an infant car seat to the frontier. That said, the Frontier remains a safer 3rd car seat than your standard high back booster because of the 80 lbs harness capacity.

BENEFITS FOR JACK OR JILL

Precious passengers are most secure when they remain in a 5-point harness. With an 80 lb harness weight limit, the Frontier protects well. When Jack or Jill grows out of the 5-point harness, the seat converts to a high back belt-positioning booster that still delivers true side-impact protection (TSIP). Kid-friendly bonuses such as cup holders and armrests keep passengers happy.

Comfort: Kids love sitting in the Frontier because they have their very own seat. Adjustable armrests give them a place to put their hands. Lift the armrests and little ones scramble in and out on their own. Cup holders provide a spot for juice. Generous cushioning and breathable fabrics ensure maximum comfort on the next family road-trip. An adjustable crotch strap and an easily adjustable harness and headrest provide a customized fit for growing children. The HUGS Harness cushions the neck and just.

Safety:

  • 5-point harness
  • Meets or exceeds FMVSS 213
  • HUGS Harness Ultra Guard System reduces forward head movement
  • True Side Impact Protection

Comparisons: For a toddler car seat with the same 80 lb harness weight limit and a more secure fit for larger children, the Britax Regent Toddler Car Seat provides comparable comfort and safety.  For a convertible car seat with a matching 80 lbs harness capacity, check out the Sunshine Kids Radian 80.

LOVE IT!!!!!!!

i had been waiting for Britax Frontier car seat to be off backorder, and when it finally was, it was shipped to me. Before ordering it I read all the reviews about how it was hard to install, was on the heavy side, etc..., I didn't care, I wanted this seat due to the simple fact that it is a 5-point harness to a booster and is a Britax, a brand I trust my daughters safety with, my 3.5 year old is a peanut and this was one of the few seats that measurements fit her and would continue to grow with her so I will not have to buy yet another seat. So, when it arrived I was completely prepared to spend forever installing it into my malibu! Well, after reading the instructions, it took all of 10 minutes maybe to install correctly and securely using the latch system. I think it took longer to open the box and get it out than to install. While it is a little heavier than my Britax Marathon was, it is nothing significant, I'm not a very big woman and i could easily carry it aound with one arm with no difficulty. My daughter loves this seat, it fits her 36 inch 29 lb frame perfectly! She calls it her big girl seat and loves the pink stripe! I am pleased to say that after waiting for 2 months for this seat, the wait was definitely worth it! I would reccommend this seat to any and everyone! I can not say enough about this seat! Thank you Britax for this wonderful new addition to your line of products!

Difficult Install without LATCH

3
Reviewer: Anonymous , Alpharetta Georgia Date: June 27, 2008
We purchased this seat after much research because of its high safety rating and the ability to continue using a 5-point harness. We have an XC90 and were concerned about fit - especially since we have 3 kids in car seats (Britax Roundabouts) and therefore must use the third row. This seat was easy to install and fit very well with the LATCH system. The XC90, however, only has LATCH installation for the outside seats in the second row. There is no LATCH system and only seat belt installation available for the middle seat in the second row and for both seats in the third row. Using the short belt installation method with the seat belt would not achieve a tight fit. Using the long belt installation method with the seat belt took both my husband and me pulling the car seat into the vehicle seat so that there was sufficient seat belt length to reach through and latch into the seat belt lock. After close to an hour of trying and being so close but not close enough, we removed the padded seat protector from under the car seat and my husband almost stood in the car seat while I pulled on the seat belt in order to get the seat belt length we needed. We did not have this problem with the Roundabout using seat belt installation in the third row. In addition to its obvious safety, it is very comfortable and my daughter loves it, but if I had better options, I don't know that I would purchase it again unless I had a vehicle where I could always use LATCH installation.

Nice Seat Overall

4
Reviewer: Anonymous , Fairfax, Virginia Date: June 26, 2008
My 2 year old son already weighs 40+lbs. He exceeded my previous seat's harness weight limit but was still too young to be put in a booster seat. I'm a certified car seat installation technician & knew what I wanted in a seat. Britax's Frontier had everything I was looking for. HOWEVER...this seat should've taken no more than 10 minutes to install. 30 minutes into installation, I was ready to toss this seat. The latch connectors are different but dont impede installation. You face a struggle when attempting to follow the manual's recommendation to "push the child seat into the vehicle seat & pull the loop end of each LATCH strap to tighten." The Latch system is a standardized child safety seat system meaning regardless of your car make the distance between lower anchors are the same. This seat is far wider than the lower anchors making the straps on the latch connectors end up being behind the seat. It's virtually impossible to single handedly push the carseat into the vehicle seat & tighten the strap simultaneously. I may end up using the belt paths to secure this seat but wish Britax would make this seat more user friendly w/ the LATCH system so that everyone could install their own car seat more quickly, easily & properly without the frustration. This brings me to the quality of the strap's release mechanism. The button is made of a cheap metal that is hard to depress. Unfortunately, Britax is the only manufacturer I've found w/ a harness rated over 50lbs. For that reason, along w/ its high crash rating & excellent features, I will deal with the tough installation. Because of the installation obstacles with this seat, I recommed that anyone who purchases this seat have it either checked or installed at the closest certified check station.

Great Car Seat!

5
Reviewer: Angela , Houston, Texas Date: June 26, 2008
I order the Britax Frontier, even after reading all the bad reviews on how difficult the car seat was to install. I immediately took the car seat out of the box and read the instruction book that came with it. After reading the instruction book on how to install the car seat in your car using the latch system, I went to install it in my car. I currently drive a 2001 Honda Accord, I placed the car seat in the center of the back seat. Using the latch system, the car seat was a breeze to install I didn't have any difficulties at all. I was really surprised, because all the reviews that I read. People were saying that they couldn't get the car seat to have a snug fit. I have never owned a car seat that has a tight fit. I can't even move this car seat. Not only that but my 4 year old really loves the seat and says that it is comfortable, so that's another plus. Overall, I would say that this is one of the best car seats that I have owned. Also the colors are very nice, I chose the Canyon colored car seat. I would say not to be scared off by the reviews just read the instruction book.

Great Fit, great seat

5
Reviewer: Geoff Stahl , San Jose, CA Date: June 14, 2008
I was a bit worried after reading the existing reviews but after receiving the seat and installing it I WAS impressed. We have a Volvo XC90 (notoriously difficult for tall seats), the Frontier fit great. The single key to a good latch fit is know to pull the latch straps tight through the slots in the seat cover vice out the sides. Since we have a Radian also this was very similar and easy to do. The seat itself is constructed well and and fits my daughter (very tall) well. Really it is everything I expected from a Britax. As to the fit in the volvo, the seat back itself is shorter than the Radian or even the boulevard so it comes in below the fixed headrest and thus can sit tightly against the seat. The adjustable headrest SIP has a bit of stand off from the actually back of the seat thus clears the car headrest easily. Overall a great seat.

LOVE IT! ...Not difficult to install

5
Reviewer: Jennifer , NJ Date: May 21, 2008
I had been eagerly awaiting the release of this car seat as we love the Britax family of seats, but after reading the negative reviews in the first few days I hesitated until I saw some positives quickly surface. We received ours today and it really was a breeze to install!!! The way in which you tighten the latch is different but Not difficult by any means. The instruction manual also has a photo that demonstrates where to pull the latch straps from. There are a few steps to follow depending on how you will install it so you need to read the instructions with this seat. It's nice solid seat and my only not so great comment is the on the cup holders. I'm sure it was the best they could do based on the design but I like the cup holders on the Monarch booster better. All in all we own 5 different Britax models and have been extremely happy with all of them - can't go wrong with a Britax in my opinion.

We love the seats! No installation problems.

I had been following the development of these seats and bought three of them as soon as they were released for our 3.5 yo twins and 2 yo daughter. The car seats we replaced were imported from Germany because we weren't happy with the side impact protection available on Britax seats. Also, other Britax models seemed a bit flimsy to us compared to the German car seats, which have an aluminum rather than plastic frame. The only problem was the weight limit on the 5 pt. harness setup. This was the car seat I was hoping to find, and the kids love the roominess and comfort. They can even cross their legs in the seat and never complain that the belts are bothering them. The harnesses are very easy to adjust -- no rethreading the belts. The side impact "wings" don't block their view like those on the Recaro seats do (we own three of those, too), and I have to say that I really don't understand all the confusion about installation. They went into our GMC Savana van perfectly and easily tightened down securely. With the top tether installed, they DON'T BUDGE. Perhaps it's more of an issue with other car models, but by all means don't let this discourage you! Buy the return insurance just in case and then READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS. I think this is the best American seat available for the age range, and trust Britax regarding safety.

Not difficult w/ Latch

5
Reviewer: Nicole , Columbus, OH Date: May 14, 2008
After reading all of the reviews concerning the difficult installation I feel like I should write a review! I found the installation with the LATCH method to be even more simple that the install of my previous Britax car seats! Now, I cannot address other kinds of installation, but LATCH took me about 5 minutes. Seriously. The car seat is very solid and fits the seat nicely. The height adjustments are really cool and easy to do. I've had it less than 24 hours, so I can't say whether my child loves it or not, but concerning installation it was a breeze. I hope this helps others who are considering this car seat.

We love it!

We love and, more importantly, our daughter loves her new carseat. Thanks to the negative reviews in the beginning regarding installation, we anticipated it being difficult. So when we actually installed it, it wasn't too bad. But we love it and feel really good since we trust Britax and know it's the best seat out there. We really love it
