The Britax Frontier Toddler Car Seat allows parents to keep their children secure in a 5-point harness for as long as possible. Suitable for kids at least 25 lbs, 2 years of age, and 30" tall, the Frontier from Britax is best for parents graduating their little ones from a convertible car seat. Why such a high starting weight and age? Britax's commitment to best safety practices encourages parents to keep babies rear-facing as long as possible; to lower the limits would accomplish the opposite goal. Once junior grows out of the harness, the Frontier converts to a belt-positioning booster suitable for kids up to 100 lbs.

BENEFITS FOR MOM & DAD

While still a larger seat, the Britax Frontier is not as big as the popular Britax Regent. The smaller size delivers the added benefits of an 80 lb harness, plus a booster up to 100 lbs, while allowing a better car fit than the larger Regent. Convenient features such as the no-thread harness adjuster help keep frustrations to a minimum.

Installation: The Britax Frontier installs two ways: as a forward-facing 5-point harness seat and as a belt-positioning booster. Push button LATCH connectors let you install the car seat quickly, simply, and tightly. LATCH may be used for installation as a booster at any weight range. Color coded belt guides ensure proper positioning of the seat belts when used as belt-positioning booster.

With the release of the Frontier, some owners report issues with installation. Parents are encouraged to read the instruction manual. Tips and tricks to keep in mind:

  1. Position the 'recline block' before installation based on whether you will use the seat with the harness or as a belt-positioning booster.
  2. To alleviate difficulty with installation, Britax includes supplementary instructions with information on a short belt path and long belt path method.
  3. Britax states that you must use the top tether for installation with children weighing 65 - 80 lbs. Check your vehicle owner's manual to confirm your car's top tether weight limits.

Convenience: The high harness weight limit (80 lbs) is the defining benefit of the Frontier, allowing you to keep junior as safe as possible. Get kids in and out of the seat with ease thanks to the lifting armrests. Readjust the harness and head rest height with little effort. Fitting children up to 80 lbs, the Frontier keeps junior protected, longer. Plus, the built in booster seat means this seat is very likely the last your child will need.  Although incorporating a higher weight capacity harness and high back booster in one seat is a great bang for your buck, the high minimums mean that you can't go straight from an infant car seat to the frontier. That said, the Frontier remains a safer 3rd car seat than your standard high back booster because of the 80 lbs harness capacity.

BENEFITS FOR JACK OR JILL

Precious passengers are most secure when they remain in a 5-point harness. With an 80 lb harness weight limit, the Frontier protects well. When Jack or Jill grows out of the 5-point harness, the seat converts to a high back belt-positioning booster that still delivers true side-impact protection (TSIP). Kid-friendly bonuses such as cup holders and armrests keep passengers happy.

Comfort: Kids love sitting in the Frontier because they have their very own seat. Adjustable armrests give them a place to put their hands. Lift the armrests and little ones scramble in and out on their own. Cup holders provide a spot for juice. Generous cushioning and breathable fabrics ensure maximum comfort on the next family road-trip. An adjustable crotch strap and an easily adjustable harness and headrest provide a customized fit for growing children. The HUGS Harness cushions the neck and just.

Safety:

  • 5-point harness
  • Meets or exceeds FMVSS 213
  • HUGS Harness Ultra Guard System reduces forward head movement
  • True Side Impact Protection

Comparisons: For a toddler car seat with the same 80 lb harness weight limit and a more secure fit for larger children, the Britax Regent Toddler Car Seat provides comparable comfort and safety.  For a convertible car seat with a matching 80 lbs harness capacity, check out the Sunshine Kids Radian 80.

rock solid car seat

Reviewer: Anonymous , Santa Cruz, CA Date: November 17, 2008
Like others, I was stymied by the installation, not immediately realizing that there are "pass through" tunnels from the back side of the seat to the front/inside. Britax calls it a belt slot (which I confused with something else). I don't know why this isn't highlighted better in the manual since it is completely unlike most other Britax seats. With this sorted out, the seat is very secure in our Volvo XC90, doesn't budge even a half-inch - and no headrest issues either. I would give it 5 stars but for the LATCH confusion.

Good seat, difficult set-up

Reviewer: David , Columbus, OH Date: November 16, 2008
I like the car seat now but almost had to take it back due to the poor instructions. You have to lock into latch, thread the loops back into the hole, and then tighten. If you sit on it and pull both loops from the outside it will not tighten. This is my fifth car seat and I spent an hour cursing at it until I came to this review board and figured it out with the help of some other reviews. Thanks

Frontier doesn't meet advertised height limit

4
Reviewer: Anonymous , Colorado Springs, Colorado Date: November 14, 2008
My daughter, is 50" tall and weighs only 50 lbs, so her height is still well beneath the Frontier's 53 inch, 5-pt harness child height capacity. However, she did not fit in that seat at all in terms of height. With the straps in the highest slot they were still cutting into her shoulders. I gave the Frontier to my four-year old instead and ordered the Regent for my seven-year old. In the Regent she still hasn't quite reached the top slot (she is at the second to the top.) So, she still has a significant amount of room to grow and she is almost 8 years old! I could NOT rest easy with her in a booster seat sliding all over the seat and the strap sliding off her arm. Thank goodness for the Regent. The Frontier is a great seat for a smaller child so it just needs to be advertised as such. The high 80-lb weight limit is not helpful when the height limit is so limited. (FYI, I thought I was observant, and other parents may have already noticed this, but I was only searching for the harness height capacity, and never scrolled down further to look at the "bottom to highest harness slot" measurement listed under Specifications, until one of the Elite Car Seat team members pointed it out to me)

Great for taller/bigger kiddos who are outgrowing the convertible car seat

Reviewer: Anonymous , Houston, TX Date: November 12, 2008
Great website to purchase from, price was just the same as other retailers and FREE shipping! I ordered it on a MON and it was on my doorstep FRI morning. The car seat is big and heavy (still easy to carry though) but you want that when it comes to protecting your kiddos. READ INSTRUCTIONS before installing, find where the LATCH and tether is in your car first,if you do that you will have no problems using it, learn how to adjust straps, headrest too. My son enjoyed this car seat much more on the longer car rides. I would suggest if your child likes to fall asleep in the car to get some kind of head pillow too.

No problems here!

I was a little nervous getting this seat because of the installation problems I had read about. However, I was pleasantly surprised not to have any issues at all. This is a heavy seat, but once it's in the car it does not matter. It actually takes up less space than the Marathon I had in the car previously. It is a very sturdy and substantial seat with easy to adjust head rest and harness and even an adjustable position crotch strap. I did not have any trouble getting the seat to be secure in my car. It is essential to pull the latch straps through the inside of the seat instead of the outside. I am thrilled with this seat and it's ability to take my daughter to 100 pounds. I would definitely get another and also recommend this seat to anyone who is considering it.

Great for 4 year old

I spent a long time trying to find the right booster seat for my four year old. I'm glad I waited and got this one. She is very comfortable and I like all the safety features. We got the pink and it looks great. Very pleased. Install was very easy.

Good overall, with a few minor problems

4
Reviewer: Anonymous , Dublin, OH Date: November 07, 2008
These booster seats are really well-made overall. They seem much safer than my other booster seats did, and they are pretty to boot. My only complaints are that the straps twist easily and that they were a major, major pain to put in my 2001 Lexus RX300. My husband is extremely handy, and it still took him an hour to install each of these. Finally, I don't think the kids can sleep in these seats any better than they could any other seat, but at least not any worse. Nevertheless, I would buy them again, and I feel much better now about the seats my children are riding in -- esp. my tall 3-yr-old.

It was a piece of cake to install once you figure it out. You have to read the instructions and it's really not that hard. They are the perfect car seat, the last ones we'll have to buy, which is what helped us come to terms with the price. We got two. The pink one and the Rushmore. I wish I had just gotten 2 Rushmores but my daughter (2 1/2) likes the pink. My son (5) likes his seat too and he doesn't look like he's too old for it, it's not baby-ish. It is easy to get the kids in and out and it feels very secure and safe. They were quite expensive, but my kids are worth it. (And because so many people say that is WHY they are so expensive! :) We do feel the investment was worth while. I did a lot of research before purchasing, and while the Frontier in particular, is a pretty new seat, Britax has an amazing reputation and their seats are tested at much higher speeds than other brands, and Britax seats are tested for side impacts too. I hope I never have to find out for myself, but I feel they are very safe and well made and like I said, because of the high weight limit, they are the last seats I'll ever have to buy. FYI, we have them in our 2005 Toyota Sienna, in the captain's seats. They fit perfect. We had actually ordered the Regents first, but we exchanged them for the Frontiers for 2 reasons: The Regents are HUGE and HEAVY and awkward in my opinion, where the Frontiers are a normal size, still heavy, but more normal looking, can be used up to 100 pounds versus 80, AND I liked the added side impact head protection, which BTW does NOT impede their line of vision or act as blinders like I had feared. I hope this helps!

I too was hesitant about buying this seat when reading how difficult it is to install. I have a volvo S60 which is tough to get seats in, but I had no problem with this one. Installed in 10 minutes.
