The Britax Frontier Toddler Car Seat allows parents to keep their children secure in a 5-point harness for as long as possible. Suitable for kids at least 25 lbs, 2 years of age, and 30" tall, the Frontier from Britax is best for parents graduating their little ones from a convertible car seat. Why such a high starting weight and age? Britax's commitment to best safety practices encourages parents to keep babies rear-facing as long as possible; to lower the limits would accomplish the opposite goal. Once junior grows out of the harness, the Frontier converts to a belt-positioning booster suitable for kids up to 100 lbs.

BENEFITS FOR MOM & DAD

While still a larger seat, the Britax Frontier is not as big as the popular Britax Regent. The smaller size delivers the added benefits of an 80 lb harness, plus a booster up to 100 lbs, while allowing a better car fit than the larger Regent. Convenient features such as the no-thread harness adjuster help keep frustrations to a minimum.

Installation: The Britax Frontier installs two ways: as a forward-facing 5-point harness seat and as a belt-positioning booster. Push button LATCH connectors let you install the car seat quickly, simply, and tightly. LATCH may be used for installation as a booster at any weight range. Color coded belt guides ensure proper positioning of the seat belts when used as belt-positioning booster.

With the release of the Frontier, some owners report issues with installation. Parents are encouraged to read the instruction manual. Tips and tricks to keep in mind:

  1. Position the 'recline block' before installation based on whether you will use the seat with the harness or as a belt-positioning booster.
  2. To alleviate difficulty with installation, Britax includes supplementary instructions with information on a short belt path and long belt path method.
  3. Britax states that you must use the top tether for installation with children weighing 65 - 80 lbs. Check your vehicle owner's manual to confirm your car's top tether weight limits.

Convenience: The high harness weight limit (80 lbs) is the defining benefit of the Frontier, allowing you to keep junior as safe as possible. Get kids in and out of the seat with ease thanks to the lifting armrests. Readjust the harness and head rest height with little effort. Fitting children up to 80 lbs, the Frontier keeps junior protected, longer. Plus, the built in booster seat means this seat is very likely the last your child will need.  Although incorporating a higher weight capacity harness and high back booster in one seat is a great bang for your buck, the high minimums mean that you can't go straight from an infant car seat to the frontier. That said, the Frontier remains a safer 3rd car seat than your standard high back booster because of the 80 lbs harness capacity.

BENEFITS FOR JACK OR JILL

Precious passengers are most secure when they remain in a 5-point harness. With an 80 lb harness weight limit, the Frontier protects well. When Jack or Jill grows out of the 5-point harness, the seat converts to a high back belt-positioning booster that still delivers true side-impact protection (TSIP). Kid-friendly bonuses such as cup holders and armrests keep passengers happy.

Comfort: Kids love sitting in the Frontier because they have their very own seat. Adjustable armrests give them a place to put their hands. Lift the armrests and little ones scramble in and out on their own. Cup holders provide a spot for juice. Generous cushioning and breathable fabrics ensure maximum comfort on the next family road-trip. An adjustable crotch strap and an easily adjustable harness and headrest provide a customized fit for growing children. The HUGS Harness cushions the neck and just.

Safety:

  • 5-point harness
  • Meets or exceeds FMVSS 213
  • HUGS Harness Ultra Guard System reduces forward head movement
  • True Side Impact Protection

Comparisons: For a toddler car seat with the same 80 lb harness weight limit and a more secure fit for larger children, the Britax Regent Toddler Car Seat provides comparable comfort and safety.  For a convertible car seat with a matching 80 lbs harness capacity, check out the Sunshine Kids Radian 80.

My 2 yr old daughter is very happy with this seat. Very well padded for her. Installation instructions were well written. I have a Chevy Aveo which is a small car and took only 10 minutes to install.

High on safety, low on simplicity

Reviewer: Rory , Aiken, SC Date: November 02, 2009
We have had several Britax car seats over the years including the Roundabout and the Marathon and have been very pleased with the quality, safety, simplicity, and durability. The Frontier still ranks high on my quality and safety scale but not so much on the durability or simplicity scales. As others have said the installation can be tricky if you do not read the instructions. It turns out that the pull straps to tighten the seat actually pull through the seat so you grab them from the inside of the car seat rather than around the sides/back like most others. With that clarification aside, I think this is a great, safe seat, however I have not been pleased with the durability of the fabric. My other Britax seats have covers made of very durable fabric. The Frontier has portions of that but the central area where most of the wear and tear occurs is some sort of nylon weave. We have only had this seat a few months and there are already many pulls in the fabric from my daughter getting in and out of it. Also, as I recently learned when my little girl got sick in her seat, the removal and replacement of the car seat cover after cleaning is very complicated. There are multiple sections to the cover, including the headpiece which covers a loose piece of shock absorbing styrofoam that just falls out when the cover is off. When I went to replace the cover after cleaning it took me quite a while to get it all reassembled. Once it was reinstalled in the car I found the straps had been incorrectly relaced and I had to take it out again and try to fix it. This seat is much more complex than the others making it more of a hassle to maintain. Overall, I feel my daughter is very safe in it. I may look into other options for my son however mostly due to the cleaning aspect.

Great car seat- read manual!

I almost didn't buy this seat and spent countless hours reviewing other seats because of mixed reviews. I am so glad I did. I really wanted the 5 pt harness for my 5 year old. I think that other reviewers expect this to work like their britax convertible car seats. It's a different type of seat. Latch installation is different, but not difficult to install. Lap belt installation with harness involves a little work. I would not recommend moving this regularly. The seat cover is removed differently than the marathon, etc, but it's not that difficult. The straps can get twisted- the straps are longer. I use the arm rests to secure them when my child isn't using the seat. I also love that seat can be secured with latch when in booster mode so you don't have to secure it with the seat with belt when child isn't in it. The only potential negative I found is the material. It's not typical plush britax- it's more like graco, etc. Also, harness has 53" height limit, so you may need to go to booster mode long before 80 lb weight limit is reached.

Used to be a Britax-seat-lover

I am SO disappointed in this seat. We have had it for a year now (and we have been loyal Britax customers for the past 6 years.) We loved our Wizard, Boulevard and the infant Companion and I thought this would be a good purchase. For the amount of money one is spending on a seat, installation SHOULD NOT require multiple different methods, with special videos to watch, etc. and 30 minutes to get it right. We have managed a good install in ONE place in our 01 Odyssey and for some reason, cannot get it back to a solid install after having to remove the seat. (One of the things I loved about my other Britax seats was how easy they were to move from one car to the next.) My husband and I actually had to use it as an overpriced booster for my 4 year old on our last excursion because we were going to be late for an appointment and couldn't get a good install. I did not spend 270.00 to just have a booster. I wanted a harness to keep my child as safe as possible. The fabric is also cheap and pills easily and the straps twist all over the place. VERY disappointed and will probably not buy from Britax again.

Love it!

I have been researching booster seats for a couple of months now. My four year old daughter has grown too tall for her Britax Marathon (which we love). Because of the comments about installation problems, I first bought the Eddie Bauer high back booster seat. Once I had it at home and was reading the installation guide, I realized I could not use the harness option, because my daughter weighed more than 40 pounds. I returned the seat and purchased the Britax Frontier. One major advantage is that your child can remain in the harness until 80 pounds. I did not find another seat with this option. I want to keep my daughter in the five-point harness as long as possible. Because of all of the installation comments, I first read the manual. Installation with the lap/shoulder belt using the short-belt path took me about 10 minutes. The seat fits great in the middle seat of our Honda Pilot. Once again, Britax is well worth the money. My daughter also loves the seat -- especially the cup holder and arm rests.

Tricky install; WELL worth the trouble

Reviewer: Carrie , Vancouver, WA Date: October 01, 2009
We have been using the Frontier for about six months and love it. I do hate having to trade it between vehicles, because it takes three times as long to install as our Roundabout. We have two Subaru Legacys -- one wagon and one sedan. The install in the sedan is a little easier (perhaps because the seat back is higher?). The very first time I tried to install the Frontier, I could NOT get a tight fit with the lap belt. I worked on it for forty minutes and nearly gave up, but tried one more time and finally figured out that I needed to turn the buckle to the lap belt 180 degrees (upside down) inside the short belt path in order to get the angle in able able to tighten it properly. That worked! I have used the LATCH belt to install on a relative's Dodge extended cab, and it took only 10 or 15 minutes (and a LOT of muscle) the first time. Don't be afraid to kneel IN the seat while tightening. Also: on most vehicles you cannot "borrow" LATCH connectors for a middle-seat install (I often wonder if that is many folks' difficulty on LATCH placement). The lifting armrests are handy for getting our son in and out of the seat. The armrests are also helpful as a place to hold back the straps when he is climbing in (though I miss the little velcro tabs on our Roundabout). The cup-holders tip a bit too far back for my liking in the harness mode. (The recline block causes the seat to lean further back in harness mode.) But honestly, that's just me being picky. This is a great and sturdy seat. Be sure to watch the video up above so you can see why you need those big sidewings around your child's head. The side impact protection on this seat is AMAZING. I feel so much safer for having it. The sidewings are also great for when my son falls asleep on long drives. They support his head in a very comfortable position. I like the rubbery harness covers at the chest; they keep the harness from slipping on wiggly children, and also make it harder for little hands to pull the chest clip down from it's proper position at armpit level. My son says the seat is very comfortable, and prefers it to his Roundabout (he's still within the limits for that seat). He has the red Frontier and calls it his "race-car seat." He giggled for 30 minutes straight during our first ride. We will be buying another one soon so we can stop using the Roundabout and so we don't have to trade between cars anymore. I will never buy another carseat that is not Britax. Their dedication to quality and safety astounds me.

I just finished installing the frontier in my Ford Freestyle. I was worried about the fit after reading many reviews, but I decided to go for it and get the return shipping insurance just in case. I do agree that this was exponentially more difficult to install than the Roundabout that my almost 3 year-old son has outgrown. That said, I was able to fit my child and install the seat in about 30 min. using latch. (I did break all of the fingernails on my right hand trying to change the buckle position.) The Britax website (britaxusa.com) has installation videos that were invaluable. I don't think I could have followed the manual alone. So far so good my son seems happy in it and was glad to get a big kid seat like his older brother.

Town and Country beware

2
Reviewer: Anonymous , Albany, NY Date: September 09, 2009
This seat simply does not fit in a Chrysler Town and Country in harness mode. I've tried both the long and short belt paths in every single seat in our van. Neither the belt nor the latch will tighten enough and I pride myself on installing carseats properly. It slides around several inches conservatively on either side and to the front. I have loved the Britax products as well and never had a problem before. This seat is a great concept but the execution could have been better planned. If you own a T&C, spare yourself the frustration and aggrevation and buy a different seat. The only redeeming quality is that it is a very nice booster seat but for $270, it's just too much money for just that.

Britax Frontier, Sept 09

3
Reviewer: Fiona J , Fort Collins, CO Date: September 08, 2009
We have 3 children ranging from 3-9yo. We got the Britax frontier in early 09. We are solid Britax supporters, however this is the seat that has caused us most problems out of the 7 britax seats we have purchased and assorted other travel boosters. The biggest issue for a parent user is the installation and removal of the seat cover and seat LATCH install. Also the twisting straps - a first for a britax seat in our experience. The latch install is completely counter intuitive. To LATCH install, do NOT try to LATCH traditionally, OUTSIDE the Frontier seat, instead reach inside the seat, where your childs butt sits, you will find openings on either side at the rear/bottom back area. First LATCH the buckles to the car LATCH sytem, then reach thru to DRAG the LATCH slack thru and AFTER latching to the actual car system, pull tight on the slack to tighten the seat easily. It took me 45 wasted mins and several viewings of instructions, incl online video to figure this out. Next issue, the cloth they are using for the colors does not hold up (we had pink), it pills, pulls and discolors easily. We had this replaced under waranty. Your best bet is the desert (sandy) color, its a diff fabric and holds up well, we have it on another Britax Regent. We also have had harness issues. Again replaced under warranty. One of the over shoulder harness straps started to rub and fray where the harness half buckle sat. We also have had problems with the harness straps twisting, which is a first for us, with a britax seat. No real issues with replacement aside from getting someone with britax customer service and ensuring you have the info necessary for the claim. Finally and importantly, the replacement of the cover and straps was HARD work. I am very familiar with BRITAX products and have changed more than my fair share of covers from kids being sick or spilling something. This removal/replacement took me over an hour to achieve. Hard to imagine if you were dealing with a pukey seat and sick child too. The shoulder/hip harness straps are now sliding into a moulded area under the seat, that makes it harder still to remove, twist out for cleaning. The two piece seat cover required me to use a knitting needle and some fine handiwork to hook some of the elastic into its holders, so the cover stayed in place. With all the negatives of this seat, I am a firm believer that the safety characteristics of Britax seats are worth the troubles you may encounter with this seat. That said, if you like keeping it simple, this may not be the perfect seat for you. We still have yet to convert it to a booster, though I know of others who have found this feature great. Overall, this would be a seat would have trouble recommending to others at this time.
