Improvements from the Frontier:

  • Increase the harness weight limit from 80 to 85 lbs
  • Increased harness height from 18.25" to 20"
  • 10 harness height positions, up from 8
  • Restructured the belt path for easier installation
  • Armrests are now fixed instead of rotating
  • New fixed cup holders
  • Updated fabrics to increase prolonged wear

Britax has made some improvements to the popular Britax Frontier to increase both the height and weight capacities of the harness-to-booster style seat, and restructured the seat belt path for easier installation. The Britax Frontier 85 features a high harness weight limit of 85 lbs, and in booster mode, is now in line with the Sunshine Kids Monterey for the highest weight limit of 120 lbs. The Britax Frontier 85 could easily be the last car seat you ever buy for your child once they reach the minimum age and weight requirements of 2 years old and 25 lbs.

Standout Features:

  • Features a high 5-point harness capacity of 85 lbs
  • In line with highest booster seat capacity of 120 lbs
  • Shoulder harness height of 20" to accommodate growing kids
  • Quick adjust head restraint and no re-thread harness

Benefits for You: Get years of use out of the Britax Frontier 85. This harness-to-booster toddler seat accommodates children at least 2 years old and 25 lbs, up to 120 lbs. Although the Frontier 85 may not be the smallest seat on the market, it's sturdy, solid frame ensures the safety and comfort of your children as they grow in age and size.

With a tangle-free 5-point harness that adjusts to 10 height positions and 3 buckle positions, this seat literally grows with your child. Simply lift the lever on the back of the seat to easily adjust the harness shoulder height and head restraint without disassembling or re-threading the harness. Aside from ease of use, not having to re-thread the harness ensures a more accurate harness fit for your child.

Installation: The Britax Frontier 85 can be used in two ways: as a forward-facing 5-point harness toddler seat and as a belt-positioning booster. Premium push button LATCH connectors let you install the car seat quickly, simply and tightly. LATCH may be used for installation as a booster at any weight range. A newly designed seat belt path also makes for an easy installation when using your vehicle's seat belts.

Whether installed with LATCH or your vehicle's seat belts, Britax requires the use of a top tether when using the Frontier 85 in harness mode for children weighing 65-85 lbs. To locate the appropriate tether anchor locations in your vehicle, check your vehicle owner's manual.

Note: Britax advises that the LATCH system only be used until 40 lbs in the harness position, unless your vehicle manufacturer gives a higher weight limit. When your child reaches that weight limit, it will be necessary to use your vehicle's seat belt for installation while in harness mode. However, the 40 lb LATCH weight limit does not apply to the Frontier 85 when used in booster mode because the Lower Anchors are only intended to secure the weight of the booster seat itself (approximately 19.6  lbs in this case). The vehicle's lap and shoulder belts secure the weight of the child; because of this, you can use LATCH with the Frontier 85 in its belt-positioning booster mode up to the 120 lb weight limit. For LATCH use with your child in harness position, refer to your vehicle owner's manual.

Benefits for Baby: Children are most secure when they remain in a 5-point safety harness. With an 85 lb harness weight limit, and a maximum shoulder harness height of 20-inches, the Frontier 85 protects your precious passenger longer.  Once your little one outgrows the 5-point harness, the seat converts to a high back belt-positioning booster that will accommodate him or her up to 120 lbs.

A 3-position crotch strap adjusts to accommodate growing children for the most comfortable fit possible. Britax uses a combination of plush premium fabrics to keep your little one comfy cozy while riding in the Frontier 85. The armrests on the Frontier 85 are short, sturdy and fixed to the seat; and the dual cup holders, designed to fit 20 oz reusable water bottles, are integrated into the sides of the seat base.

Safety:

  • 5-point harness
  • Meets or exceeds FMVSS 213
  • HUGS Harness Ultra Guard System reduces forward head movement
  • True Side Impact Protection
  • EPS Foam Liners absorb and distribute crash forces
  • Compatible with SecureGuard (sold separately) to prevent anti-submarining
  • Energy-Absorbing Versa-Tether attaches the top of the car seat to an anchor in your vehicle
  • Energy-Absorbing base deforms in the event of a crash to absorb impact forces

Comparison: The Britax Frontier 85 is really in a class all of its own. However, if you're looking for a harness-to-booster seat with the capability of converting to a backless booster, check out the Graco Nautilus 3-in-1. The Nautilus works three ways (harness toddler seat, belt-positioning high-back booster, and backless booster) but its weight limits are much lower than the Frontier, with the maximum capacity of 65 lbs in the harness position and 100 lbs both booster positions.

Much Improved from the Original Frontier!

5
Reviewer: Diane , Lancaster, PA Date: August 24, 2010
I had bought my son the original Frontier a little over a year ago- it was a *hard* to *impossible* install using the seat belt in my Subaru Outback and GMC Sierra, my Mom's Chevy Colbalt, and my friends Kia Minivan (latch was a bit easier- but still not as smooth as Britax seats tend to be). As others mentioned, the cup holders were too small for our stainless water bottles which was a bummer. I also found it annoying that the male portion of the crotch buckle always got 'lost' under my son. The Frontier 85 is much improved!! The install using the seat belt was remarkably easy in comparison to the original. I still had to do a couple rounds of wiggle and tighten to get a good install. But no big deal as my Subaru Outback has never been known to be an easy install (except with the Britax Marathon forward facing). The harness is lovely- the sewn in buckle stops are great!! The cups holders are now the 'perfect' size. Also, the way that they made the positioner under the seat 'click' into place on the 85 is also a welcome change- makes for an easier install as well. I would encourage anyone who is looking at the Frontier 85 to buy one- it's well worth the money.

Easy Install, Great new features

Reviewer: Lissa , Oak Harbor, WA Date: July 01, 2010
Note: A lot of reviews are about the OLD version of the Britax Frontier. That had a horrible install and a few little issues that have been completely fixed with the new version- the Frontier 85.

I've installed both the old one and the new one. It's like night and day how different they are. The Frontier 85 is a very easy install. User-intuitive, not challenging at all (unlike the old one). I've had no trouble installing it in a Mazda RX-8, Toyota Matrix, Chevy Trailblazer, or Infinity sedan (not sure which model). It installs easily in all of these with latch or with the seatbelt. The new cupholders are great. That was a feature severely lacking in the original Frontier. The fabric is still not what I would prefer, but it's comfortable for my child and that's the important part. Her head does not flop forward when she sleeps in the seat (a big issue with a lot of other seats) and is easy to adjust the harness as she grows. Yes, it has to be uninstalled to do that, but it's really not a big deal now the install is so easy. I am very happy that Britax took the comments from owners of the original Frontier and applied it to the Frontier 85 design and made it so much better. I'm a very happy customer. We've had the 85 since it first came out, and I'm still yet to see any issue with the fabric, harness, etc. The only thing I don't like is that the arm rests are fixed. That makes it a little harder for my daughter to get in and out, but it's really not a big deal.

Didn't fit in my car

1
Reviewer: Anonymous , GA Date: June 29, 2010
After outgrowing the Britax Boulevard and Britax Marathon - which we LOVED - we automatically ordered the Britax Frontier 85. However, it simply does not fit in my 2007 BMW 530 wagon. In both the latch & seatbelt installation there was a large gap behind the lower back of the Frontier 85 and the backseat of my car. After discussion with Britax customer service, they agreed it was not a proper fit. I understand every carseat will not fit in every car; the 1 star rating is only to alert those looking for any drawbacks to this seat.

So easy to install!

5
Reviewer: KD'smama , Ocean Springs, MS Date: June 10, 2010
I was leery about buying this seat because of all the negative reviews regarding installation. I was looking at the Graco Nautilus since everyone seemed to love it however when my 3 1/2 daughter tried it out at the store it was entirely too small for her. The crotch strap was completely under her behind. Since that one didn't work out and I loved my old Britax I took the plunge and bought the Frontier 85. I watched the install demo on Britax website and then went down to my car and had the seat installed in 5 minutes. It is rock solid! That seat does not move an inch! I have no idea why people are having such a hard time. I was able to install this by myself with no problems. My daughter loves the seat. She has plenty of room and thinks she is hot stuff with the cupholders. I am so happy I ignored the bad reviews and ordered this seat. I love it!

Worth the money!

Reviewer: Berkeley , Virginia Date: May 06, 2010
I am a mother of a 3 year old boy who recently grew out of the Britax convertible seat. I wanted a booster car seat with more safety features than the ones I was researching at the big box stores like Target and Toys R Us. None of the boosters had any harnesses and I felt that my 3 year old needed more protection. When I found the Frontier 85 and read all the information and reviews I decided to purchase the seat. I read the instruction manual and installed it myself in about 45 minutes. My son calls it his "race car seat" because I think it somewhat resembles a real race car seat. :-) After I took him for a ride in it, I asked him if he liked it and he did. The two cup holders are sturdy and actually hold the cups so they do not fall or spill. The cup holders also double as toy car carriers. The arm rests are great too. The ease of installation and comfort for my son have made this a great investment. This will be our last car seat probably since it holds up to 120lbs in booster mode. I don't have any negative comments about this product. I will update if anything goes wrong.

Great seat, easy install

Reviewer: Tracy Connors , Edison, NJ Date: May 02, 2010
I've had this seat for about 2 weeks now and we love it. My 2.5 year old has so much room, he's very comfortable. I installed it myself. It took me about 45 minutes to install it but only because of the top tether - I wasn't getting it tight enough. Otherwise, it was very easy to install. The seat is also very great looking. Highly recommend this seat!

Great seat...Don't worry about the install!

Reviewer: RoxAnne , Minneapolis, MN Date: April 23, 2010
I am so glad that I trusted my gut and decided to go with the Frontier 85. We own a Marathon and a Roundabout and my 2 year old son (who is tall) is already outgrowing the Roundabout. We have really enjoyed the other 2 car seats and JoggingBritax in general, but when I read about some of the other reviewing people having such nightmarish experiences with the install of the Frontier I ALMOST decided against this car seat. I am soooo glad I didn't decide against it. It literally took me 5 minutes to get the Frontier 85 into my husband's Jetta...no hassels at all. I encourage people to fully read the directions and Britax also has a video online if you have any issues...this seat is EASY to install. My son loves the seat so far.

such a relief to know my child is safe!

By far, the best "next step" convertible car seat! We had an infant only stroller combo given to us during one of our baby showers, and the hospital gave us an infant convertible as part of our new parent gift. A few months ago, my husband and I noticed our daughter (2 and 1/2 yrs old) was getting close to outgrowing her infant convertible, so we started researching. After reading many reviews, checking prices, pros/cons, and consulting our pediatrician, we made a list of our top picks and went to test them out at the store. The Britax Frontier was our first choice, and testing it definitely reaffirmed our decision. Our daughter even picked it out above the rest... It only took us about 5 minutes to install in my husband's car once we got it out of the box. We measured our seats before purchase, so it fit perfectly. It is such a relief to see that this is the last car seat we will need for her. I love the safe and comfortable padding, the 5-point latch system, the easy clean-up (even after beach trips), the compacted cup/snack holders, and the height and weight capacity for long term use. The car seat colors were my last concern. I wish they had it in "cowmooflage" since we are in LOVE with Chick-fil-A, but the canyon (tan/black) colors are great neutrals. SIMPLY WONDERFUL CAR SEAT ... THANK YOU!!

This car seat is great!

My daughter LOVEs this car seat - it is in my husbands vehicle and whenever she has an opportunity to ride in it - that is the seat she chooses (her other option is also a Britax - just not the frontier). It was easy to install - I love the crotch adjustments for her - something she can definitely grow into!
