The Britax Diplomat convertible car seat is a smaller version of the Britax Boulevard. It offers the same general features and Side Impact Protection as the deluxe Britax Boulevard convertible seat, but with a lower max weight capacity, seat height, and seat width than the Boulevard. The Diplomat provides top notch Britax safety and comfort for your child, even in the back of a 'lil Mini Cooper.

  • Works in rear facing position from 5 to 35 lbs
  • Works in forward facing position from 20 to 40 lbs

BENEFITS FOR MOM AND DAD

In addition to the easy to use LATCH installation system, safety belt lock-offs, and one handed recline adjustment, the Britax Diplomat has convenience features like a quick adjust harness and removable, washable fabrics. Since the Diplomat is relatively small, fit should not be an issue, no matter how small your back seat.

INSTALLATION

In both its forward and rear facing positions, the Britax Diplomat uses a flexible LATCH system for installation, or your vehicle's safety belts. The LATCH tethers have push-button releases for easier installs and removals, and the addition of the Britax Versa-Tether provides additional head protection for children over 30 lbs. If you prefer to install your car seat using the vehicle's safety belts, the Diplomat is equipped with built-in lock-offs to hold the belt in place once the car seat is properly positioned.

The Britax Diplomat is one of few convertible seats with a top-tether for a solid fit in the rear facing position. Very few convertible seats have the option of using a top tether while rear-facing.

CONVENIENCE

The Diplomat offers great parent oriented conveniences like a one-handed recline adjustment, belt lock-offs, washable fabrics, and the unique Britax Versa-Tether system the enables you to do a full LATCH install in both the forward and rear facing positions. The Diplomat's tangle-free harness is especially convenient, as it adjusts without rethreading.

BENEFITS FOR JACK OR JILL

In the rear facing positiong, the Diplomat reclines for better relaxation during long rides, and adjusts with just one hand. It does not recline while forward facing. The Diplomat's removable infant insert pillow and Side Impact Protection side-wings provide additional comfort and security for infants and toddlers.

COMFORT

The Britax Diplomat is lined with thick, plush, and washable padding that is extra soft and not the least bit scratchy. The tangle-free harness straps are secure but not stiff, and there is padding around the main buckle and shoulder straps for extra comfort.

SAFETY

The Britax Diplomat, like the larger Boulevard, offers what the manufacturer refers to as "True Side Impact Protection". The deep, padded wings at either side of the Diplomat's headrest and torso area are lined with EPS and comfort foam for additional protection in the event of a side impact collision.

The 5-point harness of the Britax Diplomat car seat is made of a durable, tangle free polyester webbing that fits snuggly over your child's shoulders and hips.

COMPARISON

The 'go-between' nature of the Britax Diplomat, for kids up to 40 lbs, means it does not have the full weight capacity of the larger Britax Boulevard. If you have the room in your vehicle, and want a seat that with all the safety features of the Diplomat PLUS a harness capacity of 65 lbs, you should seriously consider the Britax Boulevard.

LOVE IT!

We currently own the Britax diplomat and the safeguard child seat. I love them both. My son is almost 25 lbs and 27 months and sits very comfortably in it. I have the Safeguard for when he grows out of this seat at the front facing weight limit. He has plenty of room to grow before he reaches the top of the seat. I have noticed that straps twisting usually occurs because of carelessness on our part, but they are easy to fix. I love that I can easily adjust the harness height with out rethreading. Installation was fairly easy, but not as easy as the safeguard for sure. If Safeguard made a convertible seat I would buy it, but in my opinion I feel confident in the safety and comfort of our Britax Diplomat.

Functional and great... for a while.

I love our Diplomat. Really, I do. It was our first Britax, and the one that got us hooked. We bought it when our son was about four months old, and starting to feel cramped in his infant seat (he's always been big for his age). We decided on the Diplomat because I drive a compact car, and have no plans to upgrade. Any seat we bought would have to fit in next to our 6-year-old's car seat, and ideally, could be one of three across the back seat since we do plan on another baby. Since the Diplomat is nice and narrow, we thought it was a good bet, and went for it. It was love at first sight. The adjustment is so easy and nice, with no re-threading of straps, and the side-impact wings moving with the harness straps so that they're always the perfect level. It's a high quality seat!
My only problem is that at 13 months, my son only has about two more inches to grow before he will have outgrown it in height. We won't get as much use out of it as we had hoped for, and for the price, I think most people would want to get a lot of use out of this seat. We are looking at getting one year of use out of it for this baby, and who knows for the next. It's a short seat, so if you have tall kids, you may want to shop around a bit more before making your final decision.
Like all other Britax seats, I do wish the rear-facing weight limit were higher. My son is 13 months old and weighs 29 pounds already. Britax seats rear-face to 35 pounds, so we are having to replace this seat with a Radian XT SL which will keep him rear-facing for longer, has a taller top harness slot height, and still fit in my small car.
This seat is so good in so many ways, and as far as its function and features, I can't find one single thing I dislike. It's just not enough of a good thing for me! Not enough rear-facing weight limit, not enough top harness height, not enough time before my son outgrows it. That's the only drawback of this seat.

Very good, just not perfect

Seat cover is plush and easy to clean off. Latch system is easy to use. the no-rethread height adjustment is great. And the recline while rearfacing and wings are very nice for sleeping babies. We were able to use it rearfacing for about a year. Now that we've had to turn our daughter around (18 months, 34" tall though only 25#) she falls asleep in the car much less often. I have had chronic trouble with the straps tangling, and wish it came with the HUGS strap positioning system we have on our decathlon. I also wish they didn't emphasize the weight in their marketing because its usually the height that is the reason kids outgrow these seats. We got the decathalon first, but we have two smallish cars and the decathalon is really too large for rearfacing in the back of our matrix when there's a passenger in the front seat. Our other car never has a passenger, so the decathalon will continue rearfacing in it. I'm sure we'll outgrow this one before we outgrow the need for a 5 point harness, and we'll probably move to a combo booster.

Prefer over Boulevard

Reviewer: Anonymous , CA Date: July 30, 2008
I had the Britax Boulevard first, then got the Diplomat for our second car. My son was about 10 months at the time and seemed uncomfortable in the Boulevard. The Diplomat was easier to get him in and out of, and more comfortable for him. When I started having trouble with the Boulevard's straps, I returned the seat and got a second Diplomat instead. I liked the seat well enough to sacrifice the higher weight limit of the Boulevard for comfort and convenience now.

I a very happy with this car seat as it works well with smaller children and smaller cars. Other "compact" models just didn't seem to match up to the Britax. If you are looking for a compact convertible seat, this may work well for you.

Too Small...Boulevard is better.

3
Reviewer: J. Patridge , College Station, TX Date: March 12, 2008
The Britax Diplomat seemed like the right option for our family, but was ultimately too small. For the last three years we have owned a Marathon and have been very pleased. We recently purchased the Diplomat only to learn that it was really too small. My second son is 23lbs at 11 months and fits snugly inside the seat but it is clear that it won't last as long as I would like. I would prefer to make just one expensive car seat investment, so I decided to exchange the Diplomat for its slightly larger brother the Boulevard, which we love. Also, the seatbelt clips on the side are not as sturdy as the previous model's and one of the clips was broken when it arrived.

Perfect Fit Rear Facing

4
Reviewer: Anonymous , Denver, CO Date: March 05, 2008
We are using the seat with our 7 month old, rear facing. He is just tall enough, 11 inches seated to shoulder which is the Britax guideline. Overall very happy with the seat. I had it inspected and no problems in our Ford Taurus X. My husband is very tall, so I was worried that when he put the driver seat back it would hit the car seat - that does not happen. Easy to install and use. My son's legs just brush up against the back seat, the inspector said that in a collision this is not a safety concern.

A Good Alternative to Boulevard

5
Reviewer: M, W & H's Mummy , Dallas, TX Date: February 23, 2008
I'm really pleased with this seat. We have the Boulevard for each of our twins, but purchased the Diplomat for our youngest because the Boulevard is HUGE. I read one of the other comments that stated that the straps tangle easily and it looked as though Britax may have cut costs with this seat compared to the Roundabout, but I don't feel like this is true of the Boulevard. Yes, the guides that keep the straps in place are not available with the Diplomat, but I always found them to be more of a hindrance than a help with the Boulevard anyway. I haven't had any tangling issues with the straps of the Diplomat. Another commenter was disappointed that the seat was too short for her child. The seat is clearly a smaller seat than other Britax convertibles, and height guidelines indicate this. My son is a large ten months (32" and 24 lbs.) and hasn't outgrown this seat. We're really happy with this purchase. I don't think that we'll have to run out and buy a new seat for him any time soon.

It's Okay

Reviewer: Anonymous , Conroe, TX Date: February 13, 2008
My daughter is only 7 months old and looks like she almost to big to ride rear facing in it. So we may have to buy a new seat before her first birthday. Also, the latch between the legs looks really uncomfortable because it cuts into her legs. I don't feel that we will get our monies worth out of this seat.
